Accurate definition of the term "sportscar"

So, the term "sportscar" gets thrown around and nobody can agree on what it means anymore. Let me clarify: a sportscar is a car that has a bespoke, purpose-built chassis that was built for performance and performance alone from the ground up and is not shared with any other vehicle that is not a sportscar. Additionally, a sportscar needs to have a bespoke double-wishbone front suspension not shared with any other non-sportscar vehicle (that usually means in-wheel type). Also, a sportscar can only be rear wheel drive or all-wheel-drive with at least 50 percent of being sent to the rear. Here is an example of cars that are by definition undeniably sportscars: Chevy Corvette, Mazda Miata, any Ferrari or Lambo (minus their new cuckovers)
Here are examples of what often mistakenly gets called a sportscar but is by definition not one: Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, Porsche 911, Subaru BRZ, any BMW minus the M1
>b-but these cars are ackschually fast!!
it doesn't matter. they are nothing but souped up npc people movers meant to simply get your from point a to point b. they are built on shared platforms with said npc people movers and are not engineered from the ground up to be sportscars, hence they are not and are a different category of car. you can attach a jet engine to a bicycle and it will go very fast indeed, but that won't make it a motorcycle.

Exactly, it's just an economy people moving appliance with a powerful engine attached to it. It was not originally built for performance and will never be a sportscar

        >It was not originally built for performance
Then why did they offer it in 1990 as a fwd 1.8l, fwd 2.0l, fwd turbo 2.0l, or awd turbo 2.0l?

You're missing a vital definition of a sports car; one which in fact overrides all other considerations:
A sports car must be small enough that the driver has some choice of how to steer it on a narrow back road.
A car that is so wide that you are confined to the dictates of the line painter's course is not a sports car.

By this, a base 1994 Neon is a sports car. The C8 is not.
The C8 is a track car. On a surface street it fills the lane from line to line. You do not drive it, you merely follow the lane marking. It may drive well on a 4 lane wide track where you have no oncoming traffic, but it is shit on the road.
The Neon is 67.5" wide. The NA Miata is 66.5.. The C8 is... 76". That's within 3 inches of a F-150, and nobody calls a modern bloated pig of a trugg, "maneuverable."

The technical makeup of the suspension doesn't matter. Power doesn't matter. What makes a sports car a sports car is that it's sporty.
