          saar, the video in

The harbor pilot was some bulldyke apparently, but I don't think she's to blame given the two consecutive power failures.

clearly shows multiple power failures that led to a corresponding loss in steering. don't worry though, I'm sure neither the all-indian crew, nor the indian owner of the ship's company could be held responsible for something like "ship maintenance" that would prevent this kind of accident.

Chinese bots have to make it look like American infrastructure is weak as tofu dreg projects, nevermind a fricking container ship basically 9/11'd the bridge. From the looks of it the ship lost power and veered off course when trying to restart or something though, so most likely an accident. Unless by some crazy chance it's sabotage, I imagine all the alphabet agencies are looking into it so they'll find out eventually.

The scariest part is reading about the old florida Sunshine skyway bridge collapse which was a similar situation. Big ship lost on stormy dark night and boom. People drove dozens of stories down to their deaths and like one guy survived cause he landed on the boat first and had to swim up. It's a scary thought.

I know that these ships are insanely heavy and constructing a 9/11 proof bridge is probably expensive if possible at all, i just don't know why they're allowed to be so weak

My father is nearly 90 but WAY back in the day he worked as a shipmaster for Mobil Oil (back far enough it was well before ExxonMobil)
For years and years he says the ships were maintained on or ahead of schedule, and the crews were largely American, British or German. Cue the early 80s, when the costcutting started. Overnight all the lower decks get replaced by Fillipinos that work for their local minimum wage (something like $1 a day). Every maintenece job becomes a nightmare of dragging parts out of the accountants and shouting at flips that don't speak more than 3 words of English to perform complex engineering tasks. Before long everyone on the ship except my father is forgien born, with the collapse of the USSR a bunch of Russians and Ukrainans came over in high positions, which apparantly was a mild upgrade over the Fillipinos.
Anyway by the time he retired in the early 2000s every ship was running behind schedule because of break downs, but of course oil is oil so it doesn't really matter.
Anyway, browns shouldn't be anywhere near anything that floats. Or flies. Or drives.

These ships usually have multiple gensets for redundancy. I can't see the entire steering and propulsion systems going down with the lights.

            Anonymous

Sabotage, as the other anon said ships have multiple redundant, and automatic, backups. After power outage one the backups should have came on automatically. Someone deliberately disabled the backups, either through malice or lack of maintanece

You're sitting in a car, and suddenly it just dropped over 50 metres, onto a combination of the concrete bridge you were just driving on, and the water, you have to immediately open your door, or go completely under (to equalise the pressure), hope your door isn't blocked by debris and you weren't crushed but the steel beams of the bridge that were above you, all in pitch black, with broken bones, maybe even a broken spine.

The proper procedure for out of control vehicles is pulling the e-brake. In the case of a ship, you drop anchors. You dont try to floor it and counter steer with a broken container ship in a harbor

Throwing anchors stops the boat so that someone can fix it. Any functional boat could steer around it. The captain tried full throttle and aggressive steering while the engines and steering systems were messed up, and ended up knocking down the bridge and killing an all immigrants road repair Crew and fricking up east coast shipping for a long time
