Old ones aren't, probably why they went to digital.

      >old ones: open the dashboard and frick with the electronics causing all sorts of problems there "it's just a fuse bro I swear"
      >new ones: diagnostic penis goes in and 300k miles go out "brand new car broster, granny used it only for shopping"

        Old ones:
        >literally just disconnect a single hand tightened knurled screwcap and the mileage will never go up during your ownership
        New ones:
        >I don't know, so the entry barrier for tampering is already higher

          Old one:
          >disconnect cable from transmission with 350k mile reading.
          >attach drill
          >put rubber band on drill trigger
          >get lunch
          . ...
          >now have car with 92k original miles

        >disconnect speed sensor
        >odo locked at current milage
        >in limp home but that just means no revs past 5k

Digital ones are just as tamperable. Git gud hacklet.

If you have to be a "good hacker" to tamper with them, then the entry barrier is already higher.

Hey i just said they're tamperable, i never said a mental midget mechanic could do it with a screwdriver.

So we both agree that the old odometers are far easier to tamper with, which is probably why they went to digital odometers.
It just took you a few posts to get there.

I wound my 40yr old shitbox one up from 120k km to 336k km because I wanted the new dash to match the body.

Did it on the work desk with a brushed RC car motor and some rubber bands, it took a bloody long time.

Only way to prove the mileage is real is to have a car history

Alternatively you can deduce the likelihood of it being accurate by assessing the owner's character and the condition of the car.

Might work sometimes but not always
        >got a car from a bricklayer
        >steering wheel was down to the core
        >120k miles
        >no soft hands

My VW had a issue where is was recording miles at 10x the actual rate, ran like this for a full 3 months. Started off has a intermittent issue, then eventually just stayed on. I didn't notice it right off the bat, so I couldn't be certain what my miles were exactly.

Took me 15 minutes to have the dash apart, and maybe an hour just fricking around with the instrument cluster. I replaced bulbs while I was there.

But, because I'm a honest fellow, I reset my odo to a reasonable number.

No and that's literally why Carfax and similar services exist. It's illegal and stupid to do, you only save a couple thousand but may wind up in court being sued for defrauding someone or jail for felony fraud. The rollback tools usually leave a trace file of the real mileage and when they take it to a mechanic shop they'll find out.

There's also no way to mess with a super nanny system like a Tesla since they're always sending and receiving information from the company. So constant connectivity may rule out odo tampering for good.

my spedometer and odometer got unconnected for like 2 weeks. I went ona road trip so im missing like 300 miles from it. pretty much just have to unplug it. don't know about winding it back but my car was exempt from the odometer reading when i bought it anyway

My 1995 explorer needed warranty work so I pulled the odometer. It's geared to only roll forward. I hooked up a drill to it and ran it for like 30 minutes.
