    "Forl" would've been more congruous with Kiichiro's logic.

    >Toyota Motor Corporation was founded by the Toyoda family. The word "Toyoda" uses ten Japanese strokes to write while "Toyota" uses only eight. Eight is considered a lucky number in Japanese culture. For these reasons "Toyota" was chosen as the company's name.

    >Toyoda was already the name of his father's loom company

    It WAS called Toyoda until they decided Toyota sounded better for foreign markets. That's also why it's called a Mazda and not a Matsuda. Or why your TV is made by LG or Panasonic, rather than Lucky Goldstar or Matsushita.

      It was actually called Toyopet in the US for several years, before they changed to Toyota.

        Note that the original name was something like Lak-hwee, but the guy in charge changed it, so westerners could actually have a chance at pronouncing it. Goldstar was a different company, and the two merged at some point in the '90s.

    I'm mad at Toyota right now. Last week go do scheduled service because it's still under warranty and that makes it a lot easier to claim stuff if I need to claim stuff. It's a short 3 year on powertrain anyway so I do it. Pop hood today to fill washer fluid. Jackasses forgot to put my plastic engine cover back on. I would have taken that thing off myself anyway but they're expensive (yes the stupid plastic cover is expensive) and the lack of it is a problem if I want to sell it at some point. So now I have to go back there to retrieve the stupid fricking thing. I want profuse apologies.

    Matsuda is called "Mazda" somehow.
    Honda is Honda.
    Subaru is japanese for the pleiades star cluster.
    Suzuki is Suzuki.
    There was a lot of western resentment against the Japanese until probably the 80s, so I can see why they wouldn't use "matsuda" or "toyoda."

      Matsuda is how the Japanese pronounce Mazda, not the other way around. It's a Persian word

    His name isnt toyoda either it is written in moon runes
    Maybe in japanese they don’t have a separate letter T and D

    • 2 months ago

      ta = た
      da = だ
      its basically the same shit, iirc hundreds of years ago they didnt even have dakuten, pronunciation was contextual like english and the portuguese invented them because it was confusing as frick.
