Click issue is the fuel pump relay dying
Engine stopping in fifth is just normal italian behaviour

The multijet is literally the best engine possibly ever made, 1000% reliable and indistructible.

The other one is the Fire engine family, also made by Fiat.

Never disrespect the Punto and also check the O2 sensor.

you neglected it or you bought it from someone who neglected it.
          I owned mk2 punto with 1,2 8v Fire engine
barely took care of it, engine always ran even if it wasnt perfect.

I second that, PII 1.2 was indestructible, after crashing my first Punto I bought a broken one with dead engine and swapped them over (first one rolled on the roof, long story). Even the broken engine that had compression on only 2 cyls was still running and driving (probably neglected blown head gasket). My frankenpunto still drives, after my neighbour bought it

            Based punto owner.
I remember when I started the car after it has been sitting for 6 months during hard winter.
Got to the car, dug the car from like 50cm of snow, put the bat in, started immediately.
I unironically considered buying HGT Abarth when i was looking to buy a new car. Sadly they were hard to find. Most annoying thing is that I found one for sale in my country like recently, sadly i bought my alfa by then.

Fiat invented common rail with the first jtdm engine by Alfa Romeo on the 156, from that moment on Bosch bought the patents of the technology and every diesel engine on earth from that moment on uses their technology which has been perfect from the beginning.

          Cope and seethe, dilate even.

This. It was one of those rare moments in tech history, when a company invents a design which is inherently better than anything used by anyone else.

as the other anon said the clicking is probably the fuel pump and the stopping issue is just normal punto behavior the car is not good for highway speeds you get on it and sit at 100 maybe 120 with a back wind it´s mainly a city or village to village car it excels at that

nah kmh 160kmh is a top speed for the 1.2 I once did 170 going down hill with a hell of a back wind and shat my pants

stops as in have to restart again on the side of the road while pressing the gas pedal. Shit almost killed me a couple of times on the highway.

        >frick me, I need it for one last long travel to move my stuff
if you sit at 100kmh you can comfortably do it I didn´t say it´s a bad car just that punto is not that good on highways just be thank full you don´t have a seicento 100kmh in that feels like 200 in any normal car

so every time you shift into 5th gear the car turns off?

So just go in 4th. Most American market cars can go 100 + mph / 160km/h in 4th gear

I think you need to hook up a device with diag software to the car, while running it on a dyno/rolling road. Get it in 5th and see what the fuel/air readings look like. I suspect there's a faulty sensor (O2 flowmeter, lambda probe) which shits the bed.

he has a 2008 punto that most likely has 1.2 8v 59hp in reality more like 50 the 5th gear is just for cruising it just simply does not have enough power

what happens when you shift into 5th and the car dies
dash lights flash? or just straight up blackout?
does it start normally after you stop?

        Anonymous

Dash lights still work l, only the engine is knocked out. How it usually happens is I go into fifth and the rpm drops and gas pedals doesnt do anything.
Restarting takes sometimes several attempts or having to wait a while for thé engine to cool off

          OBD?
there might be various issues (EGR, injectors etc), but the most critical one sounds like the fuel pump

ok, lets think about what the reason could be for that issue:

          >too little fuel
          >too much fuel
          >too little air
          >too much air
          >exhaust fumes, which don't get transported away properly, suffocating the engine
          >some weird gearbox issue (only ever happens in fifth)
          >control unit is shot (rip)

since it's a fiat from the 2000s, i'd like to ask you if your gearbox makes weird noises

There is no other explanation. Or do you think the gear linkage pinches the fuel hose in 5th?

bowden cables touching something in 5th?

            Anonymous

i myself experienced the horrors of 2000s fiat gearboxes. so if there is some weird mechanical failure in the gearbox, that could maybe explain the issue.
it only happens when shifting from fourth to fifth. your explanation is, that he always shifts too early from fourth to fifth, while he changes gears properly all the other times.
            that's just not plausible.

fifth is od and sometimes extra tall for fuel economy

i know. my fifth reaches from 45 to 160km/h

idk about thr 5th gear issue, maybe something gay with the ecu. but the no start might be the ignition starter switch/ignition switch. Ive never worked on a fiat, but ive had cars with a similar problem come down to replacing the switch itself. not a hard job on my cars but idk about on a punto

like replace magnetic valve of engine shutdown
    never 5th gear
