My mental math says the diameter of a golf ball
I have a 305 piston in my toolbox and its the diameter of a hockey puck

why dont they make small displacement Vs anymore?

No clue, but if I had to guess the last "small" Vs were Tatra 3.3 L V8s (which still are not that small). VW more or less killed off Tatra by squeezing them out of the market with Skoda and VW itself.

If you want to see some tiny pistons look up 50s-70s motorcycle race engines

        BMW made 3.0 V8s in the 90s

why dont they make small displacement Vs anymore?

inefficient due to parasitic loss, imagine how many more moving parts there are in a 2,0 V12 vs a 2,0 four cylinder, also much more expensive for the same reason.
Back in the day tiny pistons were the only way to reliably achieve high rpm

          BMW's last 3.0 V8 was made in 1996, last Tatra V8 was 1999.

alfa romeo montreal had 2,6L V8
          also alfa romeo 33 stradale and ferrari/dino gt4 had 2L v8 engines
but these are rare limited run models

      BMW made 3.5L V8s until 2005 and a 3.0 V8 until 1997

True, but the 3.0 evolved into the 3.5, evolved into a 3.6 and now is a 4.0 L.

I guess by that logic they never really stopped.

      BMW made 3.5L V8s until 2005 and a 3.0 V8 until 1997

And GM made 4.3L V6 until 2000 or so. Are you guys into model engines?

Yeah, but mostly just single cylinder 2 stroke engines which use nitromethane fuel.

Each cylinder will be roughly the size of one of those little disposable wine goblets.

Nitro model car engines sound interesting. They rev to like 30k, and I hear that they can make like 2 HP from 3 cc displacement. It would be cool to connect a dozen of them to a central shaft to make a 20 HP 36 cc V12. Use it to power a scooter while remaining under 50 cc.

There used to be a company called Motoped they were downhill bicycle frames mated to 49cc engines
Some people replaced them with Daytona 190s with 220cc kits that made 24hp
I bet a 20hp that light would still break 100mph with the right gearing
          Which is terrifying

Because back then racing regs only had displacement limits. Now racing engines are so strictly regulated that they all have to be functionally identical to each other.
