sure, you get more free time, and sure, you can always find someone who'll do the job better
but still, its not a very manly thing to do.

    Some things to look for.
Independent garage, never go to chains, dealer only when it's warranty work.
Uses OEM parts whenever possible, unless you ask otherwise.
Doesn't charge hourly rate for everything/basic services. Oil change is a set price for example.
Good communication and gets your permission to proceed when unforseen issues come up.
    Warranties services performed.
Good documentation of services performed, photos are becoming common place especially when it comes to diagnostic work.
Service writer is knowledgeable and ask questions about issue or reasons why you want x service.
    Garage isn't an obvious shithole.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some things.

So I found someone like that but then they refuse to do certain things like resurface my perfectly fine, well within spec extremely expensive brake rotors because they just want me to buy new ones from them instead. And then another time I wanted to have a few things done on a truck including change the rear coil springs to some other set I had and they wouldn’t do it because I supplied the part. I have a small fleet of vehicles and used them for everything I didn’t want to do and spent thousands a year there, but they refused this simple request so I stopped using them, and now I just stop servicing my cars if I can’t do it myself. If they won’t do what I need done then there’s not much point.
They even called me and asked if I needed any work done and I told them why I stopped using them and they were just like oh OK and hung up.

There are many good reasons why reputable shops won’t do work with customer-supplied parts, anon. I don’t blame them. I can only imagine the havoc at a shop that would install a customer’s mystery meat rockauto garbage and listen to him braying about how he should only pay $100 in labor because “all the cost was in the part”.

        >resurface brake rotors
nobody does this on modern cars anymore because lightweight rotors don't have enough material to resurface and still stay in spec. and even if it's not true for all rotors, it's true enough that nobody wants to do it anymore. as far as bringing my own parts, they usually let it slide if I call in advance and tell them upfront "I already bought [brand name/oem part] and I need someone to install it". It helps if it's a performance or enthusiast shop. Just don't expect any warranties on anything you bring.

they dont exist. you have to become your own mechanic if you want to drive really nice jdm/muscle cars or at least keep them running well. i’ve been to extremely fancy local shops with all the equipment you could think of, and ratty shops full of ex convicts, but guess what? they all treat you the same. they’ll treat you like you’re stupid, can’t diagnose your own problems, flat out refuse to work on your car because they don’t like it- or charge you 6x what the job should be worth. this is why a lot of gayg/o/ts love leasing brand new cars. they can simply take it to the dealer and pay nothing (time/money) for repairs.
people online always go on about how old cars are easier to work on, and while that is true, it doesn’t guarantee that any shop will look at your old foxbody and go
    >oh shit! nice car anon! yeah i’ll gladly work on it! it’s an old car so this should be easy!
wrong. dead fricking wrong. instead they’ll go
    >REEEEEEEEE GET THAT OLD RUSTY PIECE OF SHIT OUT OF MY SHOP IT COULD KILL SOMEBODY YOU NEED A NEW MOTOR THAT THING IS JUNK IM NOT FRICKING TOUCHING IT UNLESS YOU PAY ME $20K BTW I WONT SOURCE THE MOTOR MYSELF REEEEEEEEEE FRICK YOU FRICK YOU FRICK YOU FRICK YOU BYE GTFO!!!!!!! >i dont wanna learn anything you fricking moron!
that’s alright. but you better hope you have deep pockets. mechanics don’t care about who they rip off.

I find places like this are too cautious and go out of their way to take the safest, slowest possible option for everything.
You'll end up $5000 into a clutch job because they took the time to chase every thread on the bellhousing, which is nice to have but when you're paying them $150+/h it really adds up fast
Also there's a lot of places like this that are used to dealing with the super rich that don't care and just carry on with "while we're in there" work on your time
