how to cope?

I literally cant cope with not having this
I KNOW its a fricking stupid move to buy this thing, its probably busted by whoever was ripping its soul apart for the last 20 years
but I still cant cope, its the most beautiful car ever

I see people selling this for like 3-5k euros
I can only imagine how much expenses are awaiting for the pure shmuck who buys it

Yeah whatever you do, don't buy an old BMW. If you happen to own one, especially one made in West Germany then dump it immediately to save yourself from the headache and massive expenses.
I can take them off your hands along with any soviet vehicles you might have for cheap.

I will dispose of them properly along with any soviet bikes or cars you might have, don't worry about it too much, I will take them off your hands for cheap.

Yeah 8 agree, old bmws are a pain, just sell them to me bro, I can get it off your hands.

Yeah especially if it's something like an M30 powered E34 or even E30, don't waste your time with them, just let them go, I will dispose of them properly. I can even trade it for a '86 Corolla, much better car that you don't have to worry about.

    I bought a 2001 e46 in beautiful condition in 2021. 75k miles.
Spent about 6-7k on it so far. A couple grand was tires and oil changes. The rest was the curse of being a wrenchlet. Valve cover gasket was leaking. Rear control a bushing or something were shot. disa valve had to be replaced - I wanted to do that myself but one day the car basically killed itself and I limped it home with only 2 cylinders firing, I was scared and unsure of the cause so I had the mechanic do it. Lost all my oil once, heard some horrible knocking, had the mechanic check that and they said nothing wrong, found out last week when I looked at it myself on a lift that oil pan is leaking. Also had ESC light on, mechanic did a bunch of stuff - probably just lied and reset lights, but its been gone for years. I'm an absolute fricking moron, but I've loved every one of the very expensive 20k miles I've put on it.

I'm ashamed to say I paid 12k burger shekels for it, before taxes and dealer tip.
Also, it's a convertible. Which I've come to realize is just a kei truck with a smaller, more cumbersome bed when the top is down. But it also goes 130+ mph.

Cosmetically it was great. Mechanically it was 20 years old, a lot of things needed fixing nothing catastrophic or wildly unexpected.
I just did a very quick search for stuff in the 10k-14k range. After looking at about 5 pages on autotrader, the only cars I would consider trading mine for are 10 year old BMWs with more miles, or 30 year old BMWs with less miles, or some other German brand in the 10-30 year old range, especially some cute MINIs. Maybe a Miata, but the old ones look so modified and abused, and the new ones are so fat I may as well go with the e46, which is the best looking car ever made imo.
This little foray into the used market made me fall in love with my little shitbox all over again lol.

75k and there's no way it got rewinded. The car shows no signs of abuse or mods, windows weren't even Black personed. I think the first owners were a middle aged couple that kept it garaged in California and just cruised on the weekends.

            >12k for a convertible e46

My fricking sides are in orbit

OP I have a 20 year old audi A4 you can have for only 11k.

I don't really like VAGs. Last time I tried wrenching on a CC I almost put the wrench down forever. Does that even come in a manual rwd?
For the record, looking at all manual 330i and 330Ci for sale nationwide on autotrader, these are the only 2 of the 15 I would consider past the thumbnail. Looking at it deeper, the sedan is disqualified for seats slightly too blemished - that became my #1 issue with looking at thousands of used shitboxes in 2021. It also has Black personed windows, aftermarket stereo, I think it might have a short throw shifter and maybe slightly lowered, so all my red flags are going off and I wouldn't touch it. The convertible is very nice, I would definitely buy it if mine blew up tonight, but it's even more expensive than mine was and I prefer my style 68 wheels.

They’re beautiful cars to own and drive, but yeah, stay the frick away if you’re a wrenchlet. If you can find one that was actually maintained they’re worth it but you should still expect to do some repairs. Fortunately they’re very well-documented and there are aftermarket options to fix some of the bigger issues they have.

Why not just take your time and look for one that is well cared for? Yeah, there’s a few issues that are kind of common on them, but generally nothing insurmountable.
    >DISA
It’s like two bolts to replace and not expensive.
    >water pump impeller
Cheap and you can replace any other leaky shit while you’re in there. Besides by now I’d say most of them have already been done anyway
    >Valve cover gasket
    Easy and cheap
    >Subframe cracks
Yes a real issue but I wouldn’t worry too much on the lower powered M54 cars

The M54 six is a very reliable and long lasting engine. The rest of the drivetrain is generally solid too. Unfortunately the last of these cars were made about 19 years ago at this point, so if you want one, start looking as they are not getting younger and likely won’t get any cheaper either.
I’ve owned two old BMWs, and I’ll say most of the worry over reliability is overblown, especially if you are even a little bit mechanically inclined.

i have an E39 530i, its a german domestic market import, other than some annoyances like bad Radiator sensor and O2 sensors, the car is fine, i got it when it was 200K and now it 255K, now it needs a new water pump and may need new pulleys, but its parts are cheap and available, i think the key is to get well maintained one, if it wasnt then youll be stuck in an expensive downwards spiral, i love the M54 is so smooth

Hard to get any OEM forged wheels to fit the standard E9x cars.

The 437M wheels are a massive bargain but they are way too big. You'll end up with a load of tyre sticking out the front arches and rubbing in both front and rear.

Ideally you want 18" forged. Large enough to get top end tyres but still enough meat on the wheel so you don't end up with a shitty ride.

17s do ride well but you start to get limited on tyre choice. MPS4S and SC7 do not come in 17s in yurop.

            Anonymous

if you can afford fancy tires like that you can afford good wheels. Don't have to drive on 18 year old factory wheels. Style 157 17" wheels are 20 lbs each, good choice for a price conscious buyer.

            Anonymous

My point is that with the 17" wheels you can't get good tyres. You have to run a touring tyre like the PS5.

They are also 8j so you'll be stuck with 225 width.

You can save big on weight with brake discs and tyres. I think some models of Z4 came with front discs that had alum hats so they weight 1kg less.

Also tyres like Continental SC7 are about 1kg less per tyre than most competitors. Michelins tend to be the heaviest.

Forgot to mention that those Z4 discs will be cross compatible with the E9x cars as they shared the same front braking setup.
