I think it's a blister from OP trying to remove the oil filter.

Anyway, you SHOULD be able to remove it with your hands. That doesn't mean you always can. That's why they make wrenches for loosening oil filters.

Last time I checked, you gotta let your engine cool before touching it.

Just a normal experience if you've got the Subaru Ring of Fire.

That what 10" extensions and spring loaded 3/8 drive filter wrenches are for.

I'm aware, but that's probably what happened, the filter on their car is probably next to the exhaust and he slipped on the filter or wrench and hit the manifold. As you mentioned a filter wrench and gloves should be obvious. I have the subaru ring of fire as pictured, but I just change it when the engine's cold even though the oil flows out slower, ezpz.

If you change your oil cold, then you aren't getting most of the sludge out.

i let it run for about 5 minutes so that it's a little more viscous but not enough that it's gonna frickin scald me

I do both of my parents oil changes and they've had about 6 different Legacy/Outbacks.
The first oil filter change is usually the hardest, but so long as I've been the one doing them I've never had a problem after the fact. Not a single oil filter leak in the 20 years I've been doing it for them either.

you can use an oil filter wrench over top of the headers to give yourself clearance from the headers

I had one like that (although a lot smaller), and I still have a red mark after a year. I'm not sure if it will heal.

You're supposed to INSTALL the filter by hand.
You can use a wrench to REMOVE the filter, jackass.

Nobody is going to give you "tough guy" clout for being a dumbass.
