This really isn't true any more and hasn't been for a while. I have a 3 litre F30, so it should be the high point of the non-M BMW driving experience, but it's really not very good.

The damping especially is terrible with rebound that feels like it's trying to throw you into a ditch and there's no sensation of what the front is doing, so you end up with understeer in anything other than perfect conditions (even with good tyres).

The car is really carried by the engine, there's no enjoyment that comes from the rest of the car. I could spend a couple of grand on suspension and anti-roll bars but at that point I might as well just buy a car that handles well to start with

I don't understand why people think BMW engines are good, I can't even remember the last time they've won some major motorsport.

OP here, it's just a very nice engine, it mogs every other diesel into oblivion in terms of eagerness to rev and responsiveness. The ZF8 probably papers over some of its flaws but as a combo it's a fantastic drivetrain

          paired with a slushbox
Wow I sure wonder why it's an underwhelming experience.

The chassis and suspension aren't anything to do with the drivetrain. If anything the fact that the diesel+auto are the high points of the car makes it even worse. If it had a high revving NA screamer or a snarling c**t of a turbo petrol I'd be more lenient on it for the drivetrain being the highlight

        modern bimmer engines have
        >near instant torque at low rpms
        >smoothness
        >plenty of top end pull compared to other manufacturers
        >respond really well to basic mods
        >insane power gains if you get serious
        >forged engine guts (usually crank/rods on commoner models and fully forged on M)
        >still deliver decent fuel economy
        >comply with modern emission b/s no problem

The only other valid options are from Porsche and Audi, asiatics can't do it, nips can't do it and especially amerisharts can't do it

what makes the F30 worse than the G20?

The 3 series died in 2006 with the final E46 M3 and any sort of interesting cars from BMW died with it. It's all just heavy, turbo'd, automatic ~~*SMG*~~ goyslop now, I seriously don't understand why anyone who wants a vehicle that is interesting to drive would even consider a BMW

      E90:

      >last naturally aspirated BMW I6
      >first BMW production twin turbo I6 engine so it was overbuilt and can handle 600+ horses on stock internals

I love my e90. Will probably get another one when this one dies.
