bike have less cornering capacity than cars, it's not even a point that is debatable in any capacity, otherwise moto gp would not be 30+seconds slower than F1 on every track while being the bike equivalent with comparable speeds and acceleration.

Something tells me if it was as fun as you say it is automakers wouldn't have made the switch to automatic and never looked back. Perhaps the public doesn't agree with you and market forces have forced the change?

The vast majority of motorcycles are manual transmission. Even the shitty commuter bikes.

Clutchless upshifting and aggressive downshifting are both a blast. Clutchless upshifts feel like a rocket launch, and going hard on the brakes into a corner, banging down a couple gears, and popping the clutch to get the back end out is endlessly fun once you master it.

    >Are motorcycles the answer?
If all you want to do is a street vehicle that is goes fast and maximizes the "feels" of operating a motorized vehicle, then the answer is a hard "Yes." Even the most mundane motorcycles offer more driving pleasure and speed than sportscars that cost as much as house or more.

    There are down sides, though.

  4. 2 months ago
    Anonymous

A lightweight car (ironic you're comparing it against the Miata) will outperform 90% of motorcycles.

You also have to remember the driver/rider. It takes a lot less bravery in a car to go around a corner fast compared to a motorcycle. You go too fast into a corner while in a car, let off the throttle, slowly apply brakes, maybe you'll understeer abit. The same on a bike can be a lot harder, and a lot more dangerous.

You have 4 huge tires in comparison to the 2 tiny contact patches that motorcycles have. And in an emergency braking scenerio, that even smaller front tire takes a lot of the load.

      Anonymous

Can't they stop on a dime tho? I thought the issue with emergency braking was getting assfricked from behind by a moron who can't judge distances.

        Anonymous

Frick no. There was a video a while back of a pigfat cop car effortlessly brake checking a sport bike off the road. Even with modern abs a bike has much less rubber to work with, a car on similarly aggressive tire compound will stop waaaaaay faster.

I prefer the dynamics between cars. Some are heavy, some are light, some go fast in straight lines while others dominate corners, every drive train layout has its own strengths and weaknesses, mid/rear engine vehicles have greater agility but are more technical and punishing to the driver.

its a bit like fighter games, each car has its own playstyle and I enjoy the races between cars that demand the users to understand the strengths and weaknesses of their own vehicle. This is why drag racing in cars that aren't built is for gays you just mash the accelerator and whoever had more money to spend wins there's zero skill involved.

Motorcycles sound great until I realize that you get much lifespan out of one than a well maintained car.
Can't beat the fuel economy, but ultimately if you're on a budget a shitbox will just suit better. And if you want a smaller ride for short trips to give your car engine a break, an e-bike can perform great even on roads without separate lanes.

I'd always dreamed of a fast car, but I'm pretty firmly middle class, so cars that I can afford that are both sporty and practical are pretty limited

getting my motorcycle license allowed me to have a cheap daily driver but also have a bike for when I want to go fast or cruise. my $5000 MT07 destroys my friend's $40k STI in roll-on, which is pretty fun

Pretty much the same for me. Luckily, in Australia I have the option of a Commodore or Falcon which sits pretty nicely between practical and fun (leaning more to practical).
I can't afford to have my daily vehicle be unreliable or sitting waiting for parts or upgrades. Motorcycles scratch that itch really nicely.

No? Rain does require you to alter your riding style to keep the bike more upright if you're actually going FAST, but for normal riding it really doesn't matter. It's just shitty and cold without the right rain gear/wind protection. Best thing I ever did to my bike was putting heated grips on it.
