Higher carbon content makes stainless harder bus also makes it rust. 304 grade stainless won't rust and is free machining. 316 is harder, it's a motherfricker to drill because it work hardens and it can rust in the right conditions.

        Anonymous

Fricking amazing anon, literally everything you said is either flat out wrong, or misapplied.
        >Higher carbon content makes stainless harder
None of the standard alloys have any serious carbon in them, they get their hardness and toughness from nickel, and chromium, most stainless steels are soft as frick unless heat treated, they're just insanely tough.
        >but also makes it rust.
        Wrong
        >304 grade stainless won't rust
It will, and more readily than 316
        >and is free machining.
        It absolutely is not
        >316 is harder
        It's not
        >it work hardens
        So does all stainless steel.
        >it can rust
        Not as easily as 304.

Pic is my rig. I have a pretty good idea of what it a shit and what is not as I have several different types of metal all over it. From 304 to 430 to alum and more. Truck is 5 years old 750k miles and the shiniest parts are 304. Never polished anything on truck.

Oh what’s that??? Ur a nobody who typed something into google? Okay. Cool story.

I'm a machinist you frick, 304 still shouldn't be rusting in "normal" environments, but I'm a lot more qualified to speak on metallurgy than some dipshit trucker.

            Anonymous

Certain grades of stainless steel are magnetic, and the ones that normally aren't, can become magnetic through working (like being stamped into shape for a body panel).

Low grade stainless rusts easily. OTOH the glorious industrial sink (from a battery shop corrosive environment) I dumpster fished in 1995 and use outdoors hath not a speck of rust despite zero maintenance.

Tesla permitted the chumps who bought them to believe it wasn't made from scrapped kitchenware and I am quite amused.

        Anonymous

        >Low grade stainless rusts easily
It's not necessarily low grade. 416 Stainless is what stainless gun barrel are made out of, but it will rust. I wouldn't call that low grade by any means. 316 Stainless is probably what your sink is made out of, and it is truly as close to stainless as steel gets. It's the grade of steel used in dental work, but it just isn't good for applications where strength is needed.

          Anonymous

gun barrels get really hot, temperature makes stuff rust faster, Tesla used some cheap mystery chink steel if they're actually rusting.

They'll get rust spots on them if you get carbon steel particles on them the same way. Go look at anything stainless near a rail line, it all rusts.

The body is formed of an alloy that is patented by Tesla, but it's essentially just another 300 series same as your stacks.

        Dumb.

        1) Coating doesn't protect against rust on regular cars.
        2) Coating is unnecessary as the rust is just surface rust. The self healing factor of stainless steel means the rust is just cosmetics that is fixed by simply wiping.

Not even that, lol. I would say it's more the 'AMC Pacer' of our time. Like the Pacer it was popular on release but quality control and other failings of the car, brought it's reputation down into the shitter. It will then just be remembered as a quirky vehicle from the past that may get a second glance at a car show 20 years later.
