Mine just holds the gear. If that's what the gear can take that's what it gets.

so it stalls when you go below idle and bumps off the redline when you rev it out? almost no automatic cars do that.

    zf8 owner here
    you're a moron
if the car is in manual mode it will never change gear by itself with a singular exception: if you let the revs drop below 1000, to prevent stalling.
furthermore "shift not allowed" only happens in three scenarios: your shift is going to drop the revs too low (like trying to go into 8th at 35 mph), your shift will overrev, or the transmission itself is overheating.

I've never had the car just randomly deny a shift or decide I had picked the wrong gear. I can bog and slap that b***h off the rev limiter all day and it doesn't give two shits.

However this is only if you have the stick in full manual mode. Simply pressing the shift paddles in D will activate a semi-auto mode that acts like you describe. It is annoying because sometimes you'll punch the gas pedal and downshift a gear reflexively, but the semi-auto shifting and automatic kickdown will actually fight each other and you'll shift up and then back down into the same gear you're already in. The way to fix this is to punch the gas and let the kickdown do it's thing, then slap it into manual mode so it holds that gear.

also fun is using this technique to downshift for corners simply by goosing the throttle.

What was the best feeling manual mode stick? I feel like this style of automatic, where you still change gears using the stick, never took off, even though literally the biggest appeal of a manual is moving the stick. Nowadays EVERYONE is using stupid fricking paddles and I hate them. They're small and flimsy and unsatisfying.

      Anonymous

      >the biggest appeal of a manual is moving the stick
The appeal of manual is having full clutch control you moronic homosexual

        Anonymous

It truly isn't. The clutch is simply a side effect of the stick. You've heard the expression "rowing through the gears". That's the appeal. Watch or read any review of any manual car. They'll lengthily discuss the shifter feel. Most won't mention the clutch at all. If they do, it's a single breath to say it's either too stiff or too light. A good clutch is important sure but no one is buying a manual transmission car because they just love clutch pedals so much.
Ask yourself why they make automatic cars in the first place that replicated the feeling of shifting the stick, and never a single one that replicated using the clutch.

what shitty reviews have you been misnterpreting
clutches in the past few years have been disappointing with short travel, and rev matching to take away from it
rowing through gears isnt satisfying because of moving a stick around near your thigh, it's having control over how your engine puts power down to the ground
if a reviewer mentions the gearstick itself, its usually just some novelty like the shape, length or if its gated, its the equivalent of having nice indicator stalks
the clutch isnt just for setting off, it can be used for modulating power independant of the throttle, the main safety advantage of manuals over automatics

Nucar shit. Mine doesn't care and will bang off the rev limiter or desperately spin the torque converter trying to set off in 4th. Manual mode meant manual mode in 2004.

It depends on the vehicle. My 2018 work van has paddle shifters for some reason and they're super responsive on the up and downshifts unlike some vehicles. It'll let you whiplash yourself with the downshifts but it has to be moron proofed to some extent so it obviously won't let you shift into 7th gear at 5mph or start in 7th gear.

      Anonymous

There's no reason why it shouldnt let you spin the fricking torque converter like a moron, it's good for driving on ice and stuff

        >You're pushing a CVT with fake gears
Naw it's just a normal torque converter 7 speed. The 2024's have the same but a 9 speed.

Mazda's don't, it just won't let you downshift a piston into space, or upshift into an instant stall.

      >won't let you downshift
