I think Carlos Sainz deserves a mention. The guy was unlucky as frick, otherwise I think he'd have a lot more rally wins and championships.
And it's pretty cool that he's still out there winning shit.

            what's so special about him?
at the time of absolute delta domination his best result is 3d
            [...]
McRae vs Sainz = SOVL vs SOULLESS (picrel)

He shone in group N, 4 years champion in a row. He didn't have the budget to properly compete in WRC.

      this
at least for cars. hard enduro followed by motorcross are absolute best but you can argue that its hardly even a motorsport since athletic ability and technique is so much more important than in other motorsports that they hardly even compare.

Because Estonia is a small country and they had a world champion (just look at the WRC threads on DA the estonians are the most active there, although a little annoying because they want everyone to support their driver) so it's natural that they get so excited about an event like this in your country.

Modern rally cars have nothing to do with road cars, those cars are (almost) equal to f1 cars with engineering and how expensive they are.

In the WRC every class beneath Rally1 is still homologated under Group A rules.

            >hes talking about the top class
He said modern rally cars. He probably doesn't follow rallying closely and doesn't know that Rally1 cars are only a tiny part of the sport, mostly because the shit regs have killed so much manufacturer interest. Rally2 is much bigger.
WRC2 (Rally2 cars) is where much of the action is at right now. It has quite a few drivers that are better than the likes of Munster and many of the part-timers in top-class WRC. If you ignore WRC2, you're ignoring much of rallying's top talent and best battles. In addition, the ERC's top class is Rally2.
In other words, Group A cars/souped up shitboxes still play a major role in rallying.

hes saying that in the top class, now as it was in the 80's, the technology and build have more in common with f1 than rthe other clases in the rally which are road cars homologated to group a. now your just being pedantic. fricking idiot

            Anonymous

But that isn't true either, they're far closer to something like NASCAR than F1 cars. All Rally1 cars share shitloads of components to the point where it's not too far off from being a spec series. One massive problem with these regs is that the common components are often both crappy and overpriced, especially the hybrid system.
Technologically speaking there isn't some huge gulf between Rally1 and Rally2. It's mostly just the tube frame chassis and shitty hybrid system, and there's nothing special or "F1-like" about those things.

And reminder: He didn't say top class, he said modern rally cars. You're the fricktard who moved the goalposts.

There's nothing impressive about Rally1 cars either by the way. The final iteration of World Rally Cars (which were based on road cars) was faster.

I would disagree somewhat with the other anon since WRC2 cars are pretty much big buck spacemagic tech as well
but yes, a major part of the sport is very down to earth and is not THAT expensive

Much of the really insane tech was dropped due to cost-cutting though. Especially in the diff department.

The appeal of rally lies in the fact that when you attend multiple stages as a spectator, you still have to cover almost the same distance during the day as the rally drivers do, mostly using the same roads between stages. You also have to know the shortest routes to approach the stages and to be on schedule between them not to miss the view, to beat the traffic, to find a parking space, to get your car out of a field with wet grass, etc. Basically to watch a rally you have to rally yourself.

It feels good helping drivers who share your passion for cars.
Also, drivers are more likely to take risks if they know people are likely to help them out if they crash.
    Burgers would not understand.
