Redpill me on the N54?

Redpill me on the N54 DA. Is it actually a piece of junk, or all the complaints about it being unreliable made by poors who didn't know what they were getting into with a forced induction BMW engine?

It’s reliable enough once you replace the high pressure fuel pump, injectors, water pump, and any vacuum leaks if it’s been neglected.
Just get an N55. It’s not as brutal but much more reliable.

I want my bimmers to start and run well every time I drive them, not have to go home in limp mode every month and then have a seized engine before 200k miles.

kek fricking wrenchlet. merely replacing the nut won't stop it from backing off. you need to use a method like safety wiring the nut to keep it from happening again. post your toolbox. you won't

Not really, but an M2 will give it a run for its money at like 1/3 of the price and lower running costs.

And a 135i with M3 control arms will smoke the hell out of a Cayman or Boxter and nearly outhandle it for like 1/4th of the price.

I own a 335is with the N54 and dual clutch troony.

They are decent if maintenance is kept up, but most are not because parts and labor are expensive. It's an expensive engine to own, but at the time of its release (2006) it had a lot of very new tech that let it make strong power, and that comes with a price.

If you do not have the tools/knowledge to do your own work I don't recommend it. If you don't like working on cars I don't recommend it.
