It's always bothered me that no american trucks can actually do this. If they did I might see a reason to buy one over a van, otherwise a van is just more practical if you're hauling things.

around, even saw one with a knuckleboom crane on it recently. They're just not popular because we have other options and size isn't as much of an issue as it is in Europe. Flatbed conversions are also quite popular for heavy duty pickups and occasionally you see one with dropsides.

true you could do have specialists do that for you but the point is why don't we have something like that out of the dealership?

It's also worth pointing out that a lot of these foreign-market trucks don't come with flat or dropside beds/trays either, they're often aftermarket and might even be on the Champ. (Not 100% on that but a bunch of the articles I've read about it imply it comes as a chassis cab type of thing and they expect you to add your own specialty bed or body.)

Going to be honest I think manufacturers don't want to ever allow a truck like that in the US. A truck like that in the USA would hurt the truck image they've built up and sold to Americans. Same reason fleet g-wagons, g-wagon pickups, and base trim Land Cruisers are not sold in the US. There is more money to be made in luxury level trims.
