Yamaha could take on Toyota but they are more interested in making musical instruments, motorcycles, and boats.

Don't Toyota have some ownership stake in Yamaha? Yamaha are always the guys they get to come in and help with tuning on their special cars

Mazda is the only contender and toyota already has a stake in them.

They could easily push them out of their investment pool if they wanted to, through hostile takeover means or otherwise. I don't think they care, both companies have a mutually beneficial relationship of sharing technology and I'm pretty sure they even rebadge cars to get them into developing markets sooner. Say Toyota already has rights to import to fricking Uzbekistan or something, and Mazda thinks X vehicle would do well there, Toyota will rebadge it and sell it there for them. Toyota has this type of relationship with Suzuki too and has tried to get the Jimny into markets they think it will do well in, but Suzuki refused. They have stake in Subaru too but Subaru refuses many requests for tech sharing and market aid. Toyota probably bought these shares as opportunists when the companies weren't doing too well and the companies don't really like them, but relate when it's beneficial to them. They don't have much say in what the companies actually do nor do they own them, they only have a small say as shareholders. Depends on the corporate bylaws set by that specific corp how much say they really have.

      From Mazda's own website
      >Conventional internal combustion engines are only able to harness around 30% of fuels potential energy. By pushing the limits of internal combustion, Mazda has developed the SKYACTIV family of engines which can deliver much greater fuel efficiency than conventional engines. Simply put, SKYACTIV engines can compress the air-fuel mixture in the cylinders to an extraordinary degree, squeezing far more energy from every drop of fuel.
      >With their compression ratio of 14:1, unparalleled among mass production engines, SKYACTIV engines bring you both sheer driving pleasure and outstanding fuel economy
      https://www.mazda.com/en/archives/skyactiv/

The regular Skyactiv engines aren't more fuel efficient than competitors though, I've actually seen that they're usually less horsepower and less efficient than Toyotas in the same class, despite being the same displacement. Skyactiv-X is more efficient but it comes at the cost of complexity. That's the gas engine that works like a diesel eengine. It gets 50mpg British in a small car, that's 41mpg American. It's not really a huge feat until you start pairing it with a hybrid system, then you're beating competitors by a few mpg.

Back in the day they built a mazda 3 with skyactiv and a prius hybrid. Got like 70mpg. Only sold in japan
