I'm not going to bother putting together an infograph but you can google everything I say.

CAFE regulations have much less strict requirements for anything that can classify as a "light duty truck" which includes SUVs.
They use "footprint of vehicle" and weight in their MPG and emissions requirements.

Basically, it's easier to make a big fat hog of a vehicle without compromising on cabin size/quality and desireable performance, and this is also the reason CUVs have replaced sedans.

          Anonymous

This is not unique to US regulations by the way, hence why in Europe you see ever more cuckovers and SUVs

Interesting, i knew about CAFE, but never heard of similar policies in Europe.

It varies a lot between countries. Some places still tax by engine capacity or something like that, but in many they tax by CO2 emissions per km. The scale isn't necessarily linear, and may vary by vehicle classification. Tends to keep the car sizes down a bit, as a US style big truck with 3 times a subcompact's fuel consumption & CO2 emissions could have obscene registration costs and annual taxes if registered as a passenger vehicle.
You can sort of work around that by registering it as a "light commercial vehicle" (e.g. a delivery van) instead, but then it's limited to one row of seats, which isn't exactly ideal for family use.

when I was a young moron I stripped my first car to the bone, shedding its weight to 910 kg, with a ghetto turbo mod I juiced it up from 110 HP to 270 HP (based diesel). these modern shitboxes need over 700 HP just to get to the same power/weight and then they still have to deal with the drawbacks that comes from absolute weight. fricking kek.

I want lighter cars too in fact I would kidnap all the C executives of every car company and beat them relentlessly for weeks to get light cars.

      But I have to ask
How comfortable was your stripped car, honestly?
And how reliable was that diesel, as well?

Cars have definitely become less comfortable as weight has gone up and everyone decided that we need low-profile tires on everything for no good reason

I mean comfort is more than just suspension reaction and tire loading. A stripped out car is going to be loud enough to cause hearing loss (I argue that most cars are already loud enough to cause long, long term hearing loss effects as most vehicles are >70dB in the cabin at speed), creaky and annoying, it's going to have effects on the suspension that are actually detrimental to handling without changing the suspension to match the weight loss such as overdamping, etc.
And without knowing how the weight drop affected balance, there's that too.

Lightening a car imrpoves it across the board, but -just- stripping a car will make it a poorly tuned chassis.

not very comfortable but I also built in a used suspension from ebay and obviously the noise was insane. the driver's seat was stock and it was really comfortable though. the engine still runs as far as I know, my cousin used to take it to drag events until Covid.

It's really not. Kinda blackpilling. Save the environment and reduce waste by getting rid of your current 3yr old 1800kg car and get a brand new 2500kg one with added freshly mined lithium and cobalt.

Yes. As an actual environmentalist (I advocate nuclear power and forced depopulation of the third world) I find it contemptible how the movement's been subverted by communists, globalists etc.

Take an early 2000s chassis, slap in some modern ultra efficient turbo soda bottle displacement engine and watch it sell like hotcakes with fuel efficiency alone.

Cars continue to get heavier, which is bad for both emissions (not like people really care) and more unsafe for pedestrians.

That BMW M5 became heavier because of emissions limits, Corporate average fuel economy(USA) standards. So BMW made M5 plug-in hybrid version, 500kg comes mainly from the batteries.
To stop the trend cars growing larger, they should create global law that bans more than 8 and bigger than 5inch stereo speakers from all new cars with less 8 seats. Its stupid how some 5 seat cars have 10-17 speaker stereo systems. Some sources say that BMW M5 does have 16 speaker stereo system.
