I don't live somewhere that this is even remotely a problem.

You can't shift faster than a dsg, especially when its tuned. Nice lie though.

            >nobody wants to clutch in and out 40,000 times a day
            Now I want to count.
I'm curious how often I shift in, say, an hour of city driving.
            I don't notice it.
I've been driving for 30 years, and I think there has only been a handful of occasions when I've actually thought to myself, "damn all this shifting sucks."
And never once, "I wish this car was an automatic."

This is literally not a problem unless you live in israelite York or something.

            It's just a coping mechanism.

I just turn the engine off while moving and stop with the E-brake.
    Much fewer steps.

Too much effort, just time your stops so that they are always going up hill then turn into the curb so you dont have to use the hand brake

Okay anons let's settle this. Do you:
    >1)shifter in neutral, handbrake on
    >2)shifter in 1st, handbrake off
    >3)shifter in 1st, handbrake on
Personally I leave mine in neutral with the handbrake on.

gear in, handbrake on. It's a "living in the frozen wastelands" thing, handbrakes can freeze stuck on. Not super likely maybe, but it has ruined more than one day

I get that same problem when I get into a truck that's been sitting for a while and the rust fuses the shoes to the drum, usually I throw it in reverse and the brake shoes pop right off.

Wrong, here's the way you park
    >Stop, foot on brake
    >Hand brake on
    >Shift to neutral
    >Foot off brake so hand brake takes up slack. Also helps test the hand brake
    >Shift to park
If you skip the neutral step you can be putting undue stress on the pawl

      Anonymous

I do this, but does it really matter? Like am I actually saving myself from future repair by not letting the car roll slightly forward until it rests on the pawl

      Wrong. It's like this.
      >stop car
      >with foot on the brake shift into neutral
      >apply e brake
      >release foot from brake
      >shift into park or any gear if manuél
      >turn off car

      came to post this

I do this, but does it really matter? Like am I actually saving myself from future repair by not letting the car roll slightly forward until it rests on the pawl

I think so but I think it would take a while for that part to wear out & start to "feel loose" or break. To me it's worth doing this just because it feels nice to smoothly shift it out of park & into gear instead of yanking the shift lever & clanking it out of park, when no park brake is used.

It doesn't matter what order as long as the handbrake is engaged, and it's in gear if on a hill. Hell, I'll shut off the engine while it's still rolling sometimes

I usually put it in first gear, but will put it in reverse if parking uphill, but for an autotragic car, you're right.

      Anonymous

isn't it the opposite? if the car is facing uphill aren't you meant to shift it into a forward gear so it doesn't reverse and vice versa?

Never pull the handbrake before having the settle in place or it might seize, especially in winter.

    >with foot on brake, shift to P
