He drives a IX MR he bought new. It was originally grey and he painted it white. I actually know who he is from a mutual chat. He loves the car and finds himself taking the GR more often than the Evo. It's a way way better street car (which is 95% of the driving you'll do)

I don't care that it might be faster than just about anything else in its price range. I'm just not interested in driving a 3 cylinder cuckbox hatchback that looks like an egg. If I'm gonna spend more than $40k on a car I'm going to make sure it has a V8 and sends power to the rear wheels only. Anything less is a disgrace and is frankly, un-American. Don't care. Its a ugly giant fat car that looks and feels like shit, on an econobox chassis. Its an insult to release this. You're telling me they couldn't drop this engine in the GR86? Why is toyota so against making good cars? They could even get rid of the 4cyl supra and drop this engine in it.
For those shitting on the 3cyl, the thing is overbuilt to high heaven and a little over 200lbs. Its designed to go into the yaris or something the size of a miata or an FD rx7, not some bloated 4 door commuter piece of shit like a corolla. Just thinking about it makes me mad.

Why did they drop the manual transmission option in the 2024 XSEs?

  23. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

I have a base model 2021 Corolla hatchback with a standard transmission I leased almost 3 years ago. The lease ends soon and according to Carvana I have an equity of roughly $6000 for my car if I did a buyout. I want to upgrade to a newer Corolla that's not a base model with some of the optional accouterments. What's my best course of action? The dealership I got it from has been contacting me and they're pretty reputable. Sure they're still a stealership but I've done my research and know what I have. One of the best selling most popular and reliable cars in the world. Also I have incredible low miles on it and a clean title (15k miles). I want to get a 2024 XSE even though I'd have to get an automatic since they dropped the standards in the non GRs. What's my best course of action here? I could keep the car, sure. But I personally want to finance a new one that's something I'm more inclined to keep long term, and that's not a base model.

I think it's time to aim higher if you have the cash and get something cool and graduate from wheezing econoboxes, look into V8 pony cars as they are reliable daily drivers that aren't gay.

Buy a GR if you're keeping long term, lease anything if you're not. Would it be $6000 to buy out? Ironically there's a Puerto Rican who owns a GR and XSE who lurks here, hopefully he chimes in. I don't think there's any point in getting the same car just 3 years newer if it's not a hardcore upgrade (or even just a different car like a GR86, WRX, or Si)

        Anonymous

My buyout is about $13k and Carvana us offering me about $19k. I'm not sure a GR is in my budget. My insurance rates would skyrocket since it's a sports car and that's not including the higher payments, needing premium gas, and the fact it's a much more expensive car to maintain. But they do have a few on the lot they're trying to sell me. Probably because I live in a rural area and no one in Burgerland really knows how to drive a stick. So I'd imagine they're having a hard time getting rid of them around here. I'd love a GR though. We have rough winters here and the AWD would be great.

PuertoBlack person here reporting. They dropped the stick shift probably because 1) they want to sell more GRs and 2) the stick shifts must have not sold very well to begin with. I would say the best course of action is to find out what you really want. The base model Corolla as is didn't get much updates at all from 2021 to 2024, they changed the infotainment and I think they must have updated the cluster but that's about it. If you're going to hop from a 2021 Corolla to a 2024 then don't bother, it's literally the same vehicle. Options are very scarce for the base model to the higher trims, you can get a wireless charging pad and other small stuff but nothing performance-wise unless you jump to the GR. If you're on a tight budget I would say keep the Corolla, it's not a bad car. I've had mine for 30k something miles and it's a 2019, first year it came out so if there were any problems (apart from the fuel pump recall) I would have found out by now.

    A fast little car?
    That's cool OP! Get one.

The #1 issue is life expectancy since it has a lot of pressure on such a tiny engine. If you take a look, it's a pretty hollow block so you will have problems eventually with all that pressure.

      >Hollow block

That big hole in the front is for the timing chain, and it looks plenty strong to me. They're going up to 450whp until they have problems with valve float, just like a Evo 4G63 is rated to 420whp before it throws a rod. This one breaks in between the liners for cylinder 2 and 3 at 400whp 🙂

$13k is more than I expected, and right now the car market sucks for sellers. COVID is over and there's a surplus of used cars. Just keep your car, it sounds right for you, and add gap insurance in case of a loss of valuations.

Honestly for the money it's hard to find a better car than what you have right now without jumping another $10k for a new WRX (apparently you can find them below MSRP). Honda dealers are on some serious crack so it might be hard to find a good deal on a Civic Si

Even if I don't drive it like an butthole? I wouldn't redline it daily or bring it to the track. I'd just like a quick little sports car to tool me around my small town.

It'll be fine to 200,000 miles. The engines on them are mechanically simple other than direct injection (even then it's D4S which is in Toyotas since 2007-08, it doesn't carbon up). It even has a vacuum wastegate and a fully mechanical cooling system like you'd see in a car from the 90s (cheap to fix, simple to diagnose)

Hollow block means they have open channels all around the cylinders. It will be a nightmare and blow all the time. Subarus needed to fill some galleys even though it isn't 100% hollow like the GR.

You know what's another open deck engine? BMW N54. It'll be fine, I trust Toyota. I'm sure by 2030 we'll see people making 600+ whp out of G16Es regularly. I bet the transmissions will give a bigger problem

Subaru's problems are that the engine is too physically big without the appropriate amount of gussets, braces, physical aluminum to keep that motor from flexing and moving around which is why semi closed deck EJ20s blow up as easily as open deck EJ20s, and you have to do all kinds of ridiculous shit to keep them together like 1/2in head studs and pinning the main studs. On top of other things like really narrow bearings and tight ring gaps to get a 1989 engine to work 25 years later. The new FA24DIT in the 22+ WRXs is holding 500~ whp without issues unopened and it's a open deck.

            Anonymous

FYI, I forgot to add. Evo 4G63s actually get concrete half fills in the water jackets when aiming for 1000+ whp and that's a closed deck iron block with 85mm bores (small). The block itself is fricking heavy and resembles a SBC in how it's made. And that's done to keep the bottom end from flexing at high loads to prevent the crank snapping or rod bearing damage.

It'll be fine. Thick MLS headgaskets + modern head/deck finishes (look how fine the finish is on some of these newer motors) mean it's rare for cars to pop headgaskets unless someone seriously fricks up (like Ford putting Mustang head gaskets on the Focus RS from a supplier issue...those cars actually became more reliable after the headgasket recall. Alternatively Mercedes having headstuds failures due to wrong alloy being used on the M156 6.3s).

Too late sweaty I already did my lunchbox on my Evo here

He drives a IX MR he bought new. It was originally grey and he painted it white. I actually know who he is from a mutual chat. He loves the car and finds himself taking the GR more often than the Evo. It's a way way better street car (which is 95% of the driving you'll do)

the janitor did not like my post calling out his lack of effort which should be blindingly obvious how bad this board has been the last year or two and I've been here since 2007, had a trip for 5 years

Good for putting your money where your mouth is. I'm thinking long term. Toyota isn't making money catering to enthusiasts and they could be selling more Lexus crossovers instead. No bread, have my dirty lunch bin. I had penne vodka.

          🙂

I don't think it can, I think a shitty little garage grenaded a gr for a record, I think if you actually did this it would blow up within 500 miles and be incredibly unreliable and made only as a record breaker car. It's kind of like those morons who use liquid nitrogen to overclock cpus to get a record before having them fry and die.

I agree, and that's only because there's Subarus making the same horsepower on stock blocks despite having a reputation for blowing up stock

I'm just gonna wait a good 5 years to pass judgement on them, the block itself does look absurdly overbuilt so it might be fine? All I know is it's a 100% brand new ground up design, it needs a good 10 years of development. Every other 4cyl in its class was based off older engines (think Duratec = MZR = Ecoboost, or 20+ years of Honda Ks/VW EA888 2.0Ts) Most of the cars they come in are still under warranty...as they come out of warranty (or alternatively they have some fatal flaw) we'll see the aftermarket pick up.

So far everything I've seen says they drive nice and feel a lot like Evo 7-9s did brand new (down to the "special" feeling those cars have) so I'm already a fan.

            so where is the GR?

Toyota of India promised me one if I shilled them hard enough on the automotive section of a anonymous anime forum.

all of these videos are fricking moronic. you aren't going to daily drive a boosted to frick version of a 3cyl or 4cyl this is clickbait social media shit of cars that are going to grenade before 1000 miles. at best you are going to get a 25-50hp on these econoboxes if you plan to drive them everyday and not have them explode. before 100k.

I agree, I had Jon @ TRE (best Evo transmission builder in the world) chew my ear out when I asked him his opinion on every other one of these cars being a "drag car". It's social media bullshit that keeps him in business because the 5spds in these cars are rated to 380 ft-lbs by Mitsu and they self destruct once you get them to the 600whp+ mark where unless you drop $5-8k on rebuilds every 2-3 years or a $10k dog box you're better off building a Turbo LS G Body or a R35 GTR (his words) instead of a Evo drag car. And mind you...people act like a 4-500whp 3200lb AWD car is slow (mine breaks all four tires loose without fresh 200TWs and isn't much faster than one with 350-400whp around a track...)...a 600whp+ one (FP Black 35R power level) is only good for straight line crap

Even if they don't grenade they drive like dog shit, they break down often, the powerbands start at 6000rpms and they're fricking annoying on the street. And the money you spent? Just sell the car and buy something faster. That money spent building a 7-900whp GR/STi/Evo could've been spent just buying a new M3 or Hellcat/Z06/GT500...but then it never stops and you're going to mod those (usually these people get liter bikes or unintentionally try to build a TX2K standing mile car...often they stay stuck in project car hell doing 100-500 miles a year)

tldr just enjoy cars for what they are, modding them is a fools errand, this tuning stuff is for the birds

He didn't window it on his way home. He was doing a pull outside the AirBnB they were all staying at and it blew. Can't remember if it was tune related or just Hyundai frickery.. or both. Was barely able to get a U-Haul on such short notice. Happened on the 3rd or 4th of July 2022. Dunno what the other anon is saying about him not enjoying his time, seeing as he went last year and had a good time.
