I drove without one for 18 years but imo they're a necessary evil of modern car design, modern vehicles are so fricking bloated and have such horrible visibility that they absolutely suck to back up, and the way people drive has changed since they've become so common, they expect you to see them coming and will just blow right by and expect you to stop when you're only halfway out of the space and have zero way of seeing them coming without the camera.

Also, I'll say that the camera does allow much more precise backing up, I can get a lot closer to stuff than I'd be confident in doing with just my mirrors, and it's a fricking godsend when hitching up a trailer, yeah I probably wouldn't need one if I did it all the time but as a normal person who only tows a few times a year it really helps being able to visually guide my ball right into place.

That's really irrelevant. You are not the average buyer. People want capability in their trucks even if they're not going use it. If you don't need a truck that can do truck things you probably don't need a truck. There are crossovers for people like you. Otherwise just buy a $30k half ton and get way more vehicle for your money.

          Anonymous

People who buy trucks are fat.
They're all fat fricks and they can't fit into normal sized cars, but they can't buy a minivan or a crossover because that's what their wife drives, so that leaves trucks as the clear winner.

            Anonymous

Not midsize trucks, they're smaller inside than a Camry. I drove a Fiesta ST for 8 years before getting my 2020 Ranger and didn't have any problem fitting in it by myself, it was just lack of room for stuff and passengers that was an issue, but more than that I just wanted a versatile go-anywhere vehicle that could roll over potholes without giving a frick, go on dirt/gravel roads, drive in the snow without chains, etc.

I'm in the industry and I have friends who sell them. You're lucky to get MSRP minus the $1k "cash" Ford is doing right now. Lots of dealers are still getting $5k over on XLs. I see the same thing nationwide in the industry facebook etc. groups I'm in. There are a few middle of nowhere pockets where you MIGHT get $3-4k off but nobody has done a 20% discount on a half ton since early 2021 unless you're talking about last year's model or a hail damage sale.

No matter how much we hear, we are not content. History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new.

It grew worse with those EDM parties and things, with sexual depravity and all sorts of madness. Porn. Eating. "My 600 Pound Life". All these things and more were shown to everyone who were watching just how bad it was. Now the entire thing crashed to the ground when Covid hit, and people still see no reason to live. Things weren't this bad in the past. It's that wickedness and evil has reached its peak.

So buy an old one then restomod it to your liking. Why do people want new trucks? Serious question if you buy trucks to do truck things.

Hunt a clean Ranger or S10 then customize it to do exactly what you want. Saving buckets of money is a bonus and with either you have choice of engines that didn't come stock because their aftermarket is huge.

An S10 with a 5.3 swap would be economic to keep for decades like any older truck, but there are plenty of LT swaps done on those (and Astros but good Astros are rare since they got expended as work vans). Ranger stock sixes tend to crack heads but new aftermarket heads solve that and a properly overhauled engine is effectively brand new. Want more ponies? Drop a small block into that b***h.

None of this is difficult for a man.

The US got really good at making cheap chicken and they were exporting it around the world. It was so cheap, that local poultry manufacturers in Europe couldn't compete and it was tanking their domestic production. So Europe placed a tariff on US chicken to make local poultry more competitive. The US got pissed and retaliated with some tariffs of their own. Originally it was just going to be a tax on imported potato starch, dextrin, and brandy. But The UAW started crying about foreign made light utility vehicles out selling their own products. The Volkswagen Micro Bus, specifically, was selling like crazy. So the UAW threatened to strike if light utility vehicles weren't added to the list of tarrifs. It was an election year and LBJ didn't want a union strike to tarnish his reelection campaign so he relented and a 25% tax was added to imported light utility vehicles.

The tax slowed the importation of foreign made trucks, but some manufacturers did some crafty shit to reclassify their vehicles and dodge the tax. The Subaru Brat for example has those weird seats in the bed so they can call it a passenger vehicle instead of a utility vehicle. But the US started cracking down on those loopholes. Eventually the UAW frickery caught up to them when US manufacturers started producing light trucks in foreign markets, because now they can't import them to the US unless they pay the tax too. That's why the Ford Ranger had a long hiatus stateside.

Then Obama's CAFE standards set unrealistic expectations on fuel mileage and they tied the mileage to the physical size of the vehicle. Something the size of a Chevy S10 would need to get something like 50+ MPG. Which is completely unrealistic for something shaped like a brick. So it creates this ass backwards incentive to make your vehicle bigger so it can actually hit the mandated gas mileage.

Manufacturers are also in a perpetual dick measuring contest to boost their payload figures for marketing.

No they didn't. And a 2004 Prius got 46 MPG.

"But the Ranger happens to fall into the “dead zone” of the CAFE footprint formula. Both curve graphs show a flat line at 55 square feet; in practical terms, a Mercedes-Benz S-Class carries this footprint. The Ranger, even in SuperCab configuration, has a footprint of 50 square feet, just short of the magic number. The best Ranger, fuel economy-wise, was a 4-cylinder manual truck, returning 22/27 mpg IRL; a respectable number, but one only available in a configuration that a minority of buyers would opt for. Equipped with a V6 and an automatic transmission, it would only return 14/18 mpg IRL, a figure that can be equalled by certain version of Ford’s V6 and V8 F-150 full-size pickups. By 2025, a theoretical Ranger with a footprint of 50 square feet would have to achieve fuel economy somewhere approaching 50 mpg CAFE. The 75 square foot F-150 would only have to reach in the high 30s CAFE."

"President Barack Obama announced in 2011 that CAFE standards would be increased to a projected average of 54.5 mpg across passenger cars and light trucks by 2025, following the same footprint-based system.[14] The Trump Administration rolled this back to 43 mpg, but this rollback was undone by the Biden administration.[15] Rules enacted in late 2021 will raise the standard to 55 mpg by the 2026 model year.[16] Graphics 3 and 4 illustrate.[**]"
