It was simply a good anime, it could've been about bicycle riding and it would still be good and people would like the bike he road.

Are you trying to say it's a SPRINTER?

the 86 was already well known as it was Toyota's send off to the RWD corolla platform, and was already used the same way people use crown vics and used BMWs here as a dirt cheap tuner/sports car. Not to mention initial D is a fictional biography of the king of drifting who purposefully chose the 86 because he was bored of winning in fast cars and wanted to show up

Where'd you even get this? It's a fricking tofu store delivery car driven by the son of someone who you described. The "drift king" himself is his dad who barely shows up in the show.

it was already a lesser known icon by itself. Tsuchiya and Initial D highlighted the piss out of it and now the price has blown the frick up. Besides, these things ACTUALLY aren’t common unlike the Miata. so the price point it semi justified. But its still a ripoff any way you look at it when compared to what that same money can get you if you look elsewhere.

The are pretty common they made 350,000 over 4 years
The 300,000th Miata was made in 1993 after 4 years of production

They were common and so heavily used and abused that now they are incredibly rare.
15 years ago it was trivial to buy whatever model you wanted, combination of trueno/levin coupe/hatch in whatever colour you wanted. Now it's a situation of "buy whatever you can afford".

Basically this, your 240sexes, Civics, AE86 bodies, and whatever meme Jap car wouldn't have been in Initial D if people weren't using them, they didn't pick these cars because they looked cool, you go to your local Jap touge scene in the 90s, they were there.

and production for the NA kept going until ‘97. but i guess that makes sense. i wasn’t born yet but i’m guessing these toyotas were never seen as anything special, much like the civics of the time. hardly see those around either. but you still see both miatas and civics being kept and turned into dedicated drag cars all the time. not corollas. where’d they go? were they perceived as being utter shit back then?

What anon didn't tell you is the majority of those 300,000 AE86s were sold in Japan and rusted into oblivion due to their proximity to the sea and were scrapped due to their government incentives and punishments around used cars.

It's not uncommon for 80s Jap cars to be more prevalent outside of Japan than inside it due to these factors. Supras, Celicas and Coronas are nearly extinct in Japan.

Due to proximity to the sea? Fricking what lol where are you getting this info. My hometown literally has beach in the name and we don't have any rust issues.

you're looking in the wrong place. in saltwater areas cars rust from the top down.

It is unironically one of the best cars ever manufactured. Perfect design, RWD, short wheel base, reliable as absolute frick, easy to tune, and a simple and classic 80s design. They simply don't make cars like this anymore.

be cool if econo cars today were still RWD and manual

It was the biggest tragedy that economy cars transitioned away from RWD at the same when EFI TwinCam and 4 valve per cylinder was starting to become standard.
The AE86 is one of the VERY FEW rwd holdouts during the crossover period which is what made it so special.

As awesome as RWD econoboxes would be, I'm almost glad normie car buyers with their lack of maintenance, bald as frick tires, and razor thin brakes are driving with a layout that is predictable and easy to drive, the last thing I want are the morons getting rotation and crashing, there's already enough accidents with ones that are FWD because they're so fricking stupid.
