      >250mpg
Like a lot of older PHEVs, the computer in those cars only reports fuel consumption, and not combined MPGe.
In all-electric mode they are not quite as efficient as a Tesla Model 3 which tends to be around 115 to 135 MPGe.

If you want a EV shitbox you might have to work on sooner rather than later, Leaf or Volt both have good resources for maintaining them. Model 3 isn't that far behind them, and will probably ultimately have more resources simply because the majority of EVs on the road in the US are still 3/Y platform cars. Any car platform selling those kind of units is going to have a lot of resources available.
Kind of hoping we get some crate Volt-style powertrains, and kit cars built to fit them.

Modern hybrids still have good highway fuel economy, plus he mentioned he drives 50-60 miles per day, on most newer hybrids he could get almost all of his daily driving on the battery alone.

Buy a Prius or Corolla. Those things are built to last, fuel efficient, are fun to drive, and are fairly cheap to drive.

Probably an entry level sedan. I'm assuming your driving is highway, in which case you want aerodynamics, or city in which case you want light weight. In both cases a midsize or compact 4-cyl sedan is probably the best choice.
You can get a base Nissan Versa sedan, which comes with a manual transmission, cheaper than any other new car and they are going to be one of the most efficient. The lightweight combined with the manual transmission also makes them as enjoyable to drive as possible for a shitbox with 122 horsepower.

well ignoring the fact that you're just wrong, OP also asked about reliability, and hybrids (the good ones) tend to be very reliable.

If you want the best car for excel the answer is nearly always a Toyota Hybrid. Yaris, Corolla, Prius or RAV4 are your choices of uninteresting commuter cars.
