      In Europe they aren't. Wagons are vastly more popular but particularly in the luxury segment sedans still sell quite a bit. As for the US:

      1. Americans care more about driving the biggest thing on the road than driving dynamics, locking them in a perpetual arms race with everyone else on the road
      2. Americans, even enthusiasts, don't actually understand driving dynamics and are convinced RWD will instantly make a car handle better than things like weight and centre of mass.
      3. They are literally too fat to comfortably get in and out of sedans at this point.

    The US passed fuel efficiency and emissions standards "for cars" with a specific exemption for "light trucks." Automakers created the "crossover SUV" platform, which is legally a light truck. Sedans either went compact to achieve the standards or became luxury to pass on the cost. It was easier and cheaper for the average consumer to buy crossover SUVs or big ass 4 door trucks to get the same interior passenger space that US sedans mostly no longer offered. Meanwhile, China and India industrially shit more CO2 into the air than ever and the US auto fleet is a tiny fraction thereof. Hooray. Enjoy your tiny shitbox or ludicrous three row pickup with a useless bed.

    CUVs like the RAV4, CRV, Tucson get similar MPGs so people prefer them because of ride height, ingress and egress, practicality.

    Small SUVs are just comfier to daily drive and get similar gas mileage. AWD helps in bad weather and a bit of ground clearance helps the vehicle traverse the crumbling roads of this once-great nation. And if Pablo is drunk at the wheel of his F-250, I'd rather be in an SUV than a sedan.     Car manufacturers realized that they could cheat emissions standards by selling nothing but vehicles on truck platforms. That, combined with most new car buyers being paranoid homosexuals who "need to be high up" (see the first post ITT) and you have the US car market ruining shit for everyone else.

    Trucks and SUV have higher profit margins. Americans are weak minded and fall for the marketing. I drive a civic coupe and can't see where I'm traveling. Naturally, every vehicle has one occupant and is headed to soccer practice. The pickups are waxed and lacking scratches too.

    They were losing market share to the growing SUV market,but without CAFE things wouldn't have gotten this bad. By 2026 the 1st gen Prius won't even hit the CAFE standard of 46mpg.
    The engine options on the final few years of any of the mid or "full size" (still tiny vs a Panther) domestic sedans were grim, it's tiny engine with turdbos, NA 4 bangers that aren't even bigger than my Honda on the mids. Impala's and Taurus's had base V6's, but comparing msrp's, the somehow managed to cost as much or more than a V6 Camry, so I can't imagine buying a domestic that costs as much as a Toyota. The domestics are dead, now everyone aside from Toyota is at a 2.0 NA,1.5 turdbo, or a V6 pushed way up market like the Maxima somehow costing fricking $38000.

    We have more than double the population since 1950, but everyone is cramming closer and closer together into dense urban areas. This means that physical space is getting exponentially more expensive, so utilizing vertical height is more important. Vehicles like sedans and wagons which are long and low don't utilize space very effectively so they don't make much sense. Hatchbacks and SUV, which are tall for their footprint, are a lot more economical.

    5-door vehicles have always been the most practical option for the majority of drivers. Euros and Asians have understood this forever and it's why there are so many hatchbacks, wagons, and vans there, but the US market has considered those types unfashionable for decades. Manufacturers in recent years have figured out that they can lift those same vehicle types a bit, put some rugged-looking body cladding on them, and suddenly they're fashionable "SUVs" that sell like crazy because they've got that same 5-door practicality but without the stigma of driving the uncool car your parents had or one that's associated with poverty.

    I also think that the mainstreaming of outdoor recreation and DIYing (which is really because people can't afford trades) as well as the decline of multi-car households have really driven both SUV and pickup truck sales.
