        Yeah, me too
Here's the deal with those cars: they literally do not make anything like them at all any more, so you will fall in love with it no matter what, as long as the heat, AC, and radio work
Treat it like the classic it's about to become

Genuinely I find myself saying “I love this car”

Mainly because no payment, insurance is $60 a month, and everything is manual so nothing goes wrong with it. Thing is a tank and hardly uses any gas. I drove 40miles to and from work in city traffic so it’s not like I need to go faster than 40mph

            Anonymous

            Yep
A new set of tires will be like $200, it will coast through any snow or rain, you can park it anywhere even if there's a cart in the spot, you can actually hear traffic around you and you can see everything for miles
Yes, it understeers and torque steers and maybe it makes a clicky noise when the fan's on full blast
But someone's eventually going to offer you cash money for it and you can be like "lolnofrickoffhomosexual!" and it will put a smile on your face every time you look at her

Keep it as a beater. No point in putting miles on something fancy if you're just commuting back and forth to work. Drive it till something breaks that's not worth fixing.

Its basically a Toyota Sprinter which was a version of the Corolla they sold in Japan so it should last you a long time with the Toyota engine and transmission.

Maybe consider putting a cheap media player screen in it if you can't live without out modern tech.

        >Grabbed it for 1200 as a work vehicle. 140k on the odometer

Sounds like a good buy to me.

Toyota was kicking so much ass back then they let other companies sell Toyotas with their badging because they didn't have anyone else to compete with
Suzuki did the same thing but lost
          They lost against themself
It's a risky strategy but it can be fun, like a little choking once in a while

How’s that supposed to work? My Prizm has 280k miles and is burning excessive amounts of oil.
I got it back in 2019 for $1,400 at 210k miles.

I mean, you did buy yours for $1400 with over 200k miles. So it clearly does work.

        All 1zzfe engines burn oil.
Mine drinks about 1 qt every 5,000 miles.
I just add a bit once I go past 2,500 miles on a change
Keep driving it until it explodes.

Yes, I’m aware they all burn oil, but I burn a quart every 40 miles.

            Anonymous

            Eh, you sure?
That's missing the oil scraper ring kind of oil burning.

            Anonymous

Yeah my 87 Tercel only burned a quart about every 2,500 miles, might want to get that checked

The piston rings probably has carbon deposits caked on them. A bunch of smoke comes out of the exhaust under acceleration, and sometimes deceleration (engine braking).

I'd get that fixed anon. I realize its a beater; but at this point you're just throwing money at oil. Have a mechanic look at it and see what they want to fix it.

            If this anon is right....

            Looks like Bad rings.
1zz burn oil due to the small oil control rings and lacking oil drainback holes.
Smoking out the back is almost always Bad rings or head gasket.
            Blue smoke: oil
White smoke: Coolant or transmission fluid
            Black: excess fuel.

And its bad rings then its probably worth fixing.

    I drove a 2000 Corolla. Same car.
    297,000 miles on it.
Still gets the same MPG as it did new.
Compression in each cyl basically identical to brand new.
Oil lab says the oil looks absolutely fantastic.
    50/50 street/highway: 32mpg avg
    All highway 75mph: 38 mpg
    All highway 60mph: 44mpg

    ARE NEW CARS EVEN TRYING?

    >I'll replace it when it dies.
    >200,000 miles & 10 years go by
    >It's still fucin solid.

I absolutely refuse to replace anything and still functions.
Even though I have a ton of money to replace it.
    What do?

Roll it over to 300 then start considering your options

        It's like 1 yr from hitting 300k
I'll be making $65 an hour next year.
But that car just seems to work.

Well, some of the repairs will get more expensive
Maintenance will be the same but things like motor mounts, bushings, suspension, that will need replacing
Set aside some cash for that, and then bring it in for an estimate, and if that estimate starts running into down payment on another shitbox, but remember, they can't make vehicles like these for all kinds of regulatory reasons, so it will always be special

If I am able to hold onto my Prizm, rebuild/replace the engine, and get another car, I’ve considered taking to autocross events.
Then again, it’s got a 3-speed automatic, so I don’t see the performance advantage in that.

I decided to apply for a job similar to what I currently do, but earn $8/hr more than what I’m earning now.
That will help me achieve my goal
I’ll still be a poorgay, but not a $12/hr poorgay.

The engine either needs a rebuild or a replacement.

I'd try an engine flush before getting a rebuild. Don't really have anything to lose. And if the flush blows your engine then you can get a replacement.

Just verifying for myself: blown head gasket if burning coolant, busted rear main seal if burning transmission fluid?

          Anonymous

It depends on the car when it comes to burning transmission fluid.
It's not super common but certain designs can do it.

I'd get that fixed anon. I realize its a beater; but at this point you're just throwing money at oil. Have a mechanic look at it and see what they want to fix it.
