>Be me
>Want to buy first car since highschool
>Start looking at manual cars for sale around me
>Talk to friends and family about it
>Both boomers and zoomers hear the word manual and instantly try to persuade me from buying a manual car despite of interest of me wanting to learn and own one
>They all tell me to pay for some driving lessons on how to drive a manual, and even then they still tell me to not get one
I'm still going to do it, but why the frick is it that big of an issue to people? Is it just the local morons near me or is there some underlying issue/annoyance from owning a manual car that's not that apparent to me?
I have never faced opposition greater than when I wanted a manual.
Literally nobody supported me. Only arguments. Ive had my own dad tell me he hopes I get in a crash because I wanted a manual
They don't say lonely driver for nothin anon.
To a Euro this literally doesn't make any sense. Parents usually push kids to buy manuals because they are cheaper to run, cheaper to insure, cheaper to fix if the child fricks it, and a good learning lesson. They are also legit more fuel efficient that automatics 99.999% of the time.
>They are also legit more fuel efficient that automatics 99.999% of the time.
I like manuals but this is bullshit for almost any car that is less than 10 years old.
Nope - manufacturers simply lie about mpg, by suggesting non-ideal shift timing to the official testers, which they do to sucker people into buying the more expensive automatic because "it'll pay for itself in efficiency". All the mpg-logging websites boomer wizards use agree that manuals get better real-world mpg to autos, including CVTs. If it's a fluid-coupling, it's inefficient.
manuals are far more efficient than 90s torque converter autos, but most new(er) cars use DCTs which are way more efficient than torque converters, and nowadays they definitely give manuals a run for their money when it comes to fuel economy. Smiles per mile on the other hand is a different story
>added weight
>added drivetrain losses
>much more control over RPM with a manual
Look, I'll be the first one to say manuals aren't the best at everything, but you can definitely get better mpgs from them.
>Ive had my own dad tell me he hopes I get in a crash because I wanted a manual
Damn that sucks, anon
These days manual transmissions are just seen as an annoyance to anyone that's not a car enthusiast or a crotchety old boomer that hates technology. My dad has been a gearhead his whole life and he taught me how to drive stick when I showed interest in it, but if not for him I would have had to figure it out on my own.
Man I love having cool parents and relatives.
I think people only remember the bad times they had with manuals.
Auto is the objectively better option, wrenchlet.
Boomers drove manuals so they know it can be pain in the ass
Zoomers hate anything that is not mainstream
Either way go get em champ
Vocabulary word nerd moment: They were trying to "dissuade" you from buying one, meaning steer you against that option. To use "persuade me from" means the same thing, but it's a clunky way to say it. It's not wrong, though.
I drove autos until I got my license because that makes it easier in the US. I got the hang of a manual two times around the neighborhood and I've loved it ever since. Some people take longer. And yes I did my fair share of lurching and stalling along the way. Don't fret it.
just ignore them. the only time having a standard trans sucks is in stop go traffic.
They're even better in stop and go so you have control instead of the surging mush pedal with at least 4 levels of jerky gear hunting and no engine braking.
Get a manual for your first car. Not only are manual shitboxes considerably cheaper, but it's just good to know how to drive manual, you never know when it could wind up mattering.
>buy manual
>still has same gas mileage 25 years later
>buy auto
>clutch packs are shredded just after the lease ends
autos are built to lease OP do not get an auto unless you are going lease it for less than 5 years
oh fugg
I have my first auto car and it's started getting worse gas mileage recently. Spark plugs, air filter, etc is good. It might be that.
tbf it does have 190k miles though.
You're fricked. The autotragic is going to shit out and it's going to cost $4k to fix. Should have been a manual chad.
ehhh I got if for free so really I'd have to compare the cost of the repair to getting a new car, which in the current market just fixing it probably wouldn't be a bad finical move.
I'm also not a poorgay anymore, I'm just trying to get the most out of it to stack money. Guess I'll start shopping around for rebuilts. I've done clutches before, so I can't imagine replacing an auto is any harder. If I can snap a rebuilt for 1-2k it could be worth it if it gives me a couple more years out of the car.
Hell, might even chance it with just a straight up used one. I'm really only looking to get 1-3 more years out of it max.
Autos are falling out of style now. CVTs are going in most economy cars now and those disintegrate around 60k miles for the most part.
I was born in the US but my mom and dad immigrated to the US from Poland. When I told them I wanted a manual they said good this way you'll be able to drive anything when you go to visit Europe as well. American boomer parents seem nuts sometimes in comparison
Do you consider yourself a white person in America when all of western Europe considers you non-white subhuman garbage and only Roma Gypsies are lower lifeforms in Europe?
Amerimutt once again unable to tell apart any two eastern european countries
>tfw dad taught you advanced manual driving on comfy roads.
nothing better than this lads I’m telling you
>eastern european
Poland is not an Eastern European country. They're not even Slavs either. They lick boots and toilets clean like nobody's business though.
no due to the cucked state of modern white people being too embarassing
Manual driving lessons would be an absolute waste of money. Youtube videos to avoid bad habits and self-practice are enough.
Also gl finding a deal, anon. Used car market is making even clapped out civic si owners uppity.
>manual driving lessons are a waste
DA is so awful man
People who are ready to buy a driver's car or enthusiast car or sports car absolutely have $100-$150 pocket change for a day's lesson to learn on a loaner car.
>Manual driving lessons would be an absolute waste of money.
this is trash advice. 80 dollars for 1 hour of manual lessons was the difference for me from stalling over and over and over again to being able to drive the car I wanted off the lot at the dealers (albeit awkwardly) and take it home. You cannot learn how a clutch pedal feels and what the bite in your car feels like from a youtube video. You can have someone explain it for hours and hours nothing matters until you get in a car and try it yourself. The first hour is the most brutal in the learning process. You will absolutely be better off investing a little money to frick up in a controlled environment first before you try the real thing on the car you will buy
Yeah this. Here the first 5 or so driving lessons are just learning to pull away without stalling. I was still making mistakes until my 7th lesson when it finally just clicked.
80 dollars for one?! Fricking hell
I payed 550€ for 32.
Not him but I'd rather pay $80 than 550 yuros
Nonsense. Why would you want to get fleeced like that?
I had 32 hours of driving experience when i went to my driving exam. I aced that shit, not a single dropped point.
the exam doesn't really matter in murrica like it does for yuros
>Manual driving lessons would be an absolute waste of money
not OP, but i would have had to do 10 more mandatory driving lessons if i was going to take manual license.
thats 10 hours, every hour was like 50 usd. so 500 bucks extra to pay.
I have been driving for ten years but only auto. Just ordered a manual car that will be here in a couple months. Will I frick it up trying to drive home?
You will probably stall a bunch of times and might get stuck if you end up having to start from a dead stop going up hill
No idea mate
Everyone in England uses manual
Only the disabled and pay monthly deanos use autoboxes
Yeah if fricking Cheryl the beautician can drive a manual OP can do it
Manuals are fine. Only downside is if you have to drive in traffic.
Yeah that's stupid. Just follow your gut, ignore those morons, and go with manual. If you like driving then you won't regret it. It's a lot more fun and engaging.
>pay for some driving lessons
Lmao bro you don't need driving lessons. When I bought my first manual car, I drove it home no issue. I stalled a few times but who cares that's part of the learning process and you'll get it down with time.
If you think you need to just watch a few youtube videos before to understand what's actually going on in the transmission and how to operate it accordingly.
>Only downside is if you have to drive in traffic.
This is a meme. You don't have to hold the brake pedal like in an auto. Just keep it in first and let the car roll by itself.
This is horrible advice.
>DOOD just FLOOR IT home who CARES if you frick up the internals
Either know how to drive it or do not.
>FLOOR IT
Lmao do you think OP is an idiot? Why would he floor the car especially with break-in.
Well yah it depends on speed. If traffic is going 15+ then shift accordingly.
>do you think OP is an idiot?
Yes. This is the standard for any new driver, you idiot.
>shift accordingly.
Thanks, that clears everything up for the new manual driver. Greasy dealership hands typed this post.
>This is a meme. You don't have to hold the brake pedal like in an auto. Just keep it in first and let the car roll by itself.
This guy is trying to get you to blow up your engine.
stop talking to npcs lol
they were put in by the devs to make it harder to win
>dad encouraged me to learn stick and buy a manual for my 3rd car
>sat in the passenger seat while i was test driving what i would eventually buy
>told me how i fricked up every time i stalled or chirped the tires
>had it down pat in half an hour
I fricking love my dad
Moral of the story for OP is that sometimes you gotta seek out people in your life to support you if the ones closest to you won't. And if there's literally no one who can help, then maybe consider a paid manual lesson or two.
Only in America, anon; only in America.
The land of the car has become the land of the non-driver, commodity conveyance
Npcs hate manuals. Autos and paddle shifters are for Npc morons.
NPCs can't into manuals. It enrages ans confuses them.
If you don't know how to drive what you want, buy a bus pass.
My wife is the only other person I know that prefers driving a manual. Only ONE of her cars even had a properly functioning clutch and she still prefers it to an automatic.
bought a gt86 brand new. uncle went with me and he kept trying to talk me away from manual but i did it anyway
no regrets
Since this is the designated manual vs auto troony thread, figured I'd ask here. I've only driven an NA miat, where the shift rod is directly controlling the gearbox. How different does it feel using a modern cable operated shifter in FWD cars? Asking because I'm thinking of getting a GR corolla down the line
Feels just a tad sloppier although no one ever adjusts the cables, so doing so might inprove it a lot. My sister as a cable shifter car and for commuter purposes it's perfectly fine.
Also some 90's might have solid connection to the trans, at least Honda's of that era did, idk about Toyotas though.
The shift action is a bit lighter and there's zero NVH through the shifter, but if done correctly like Honda for instance, cable shifters can feel really good
expect some mild slop that you may be able to tighten up in some way.
in my civic it's the spherical bushing for the left-right movement that gives the most amount of slop. after that it's things that feel like slop but are for noise/vibration damping; the shifter mounting bushings (soft rubber), and the cable end bushings(soft rubber/plastic).
I manual swapped my car and was able to do a 120 mile trip in one in about 3 hours of seat time
How long does it take to pick up driving manual? My dad's driven manual, so I can learn from him but I just want to be able to be independent ASAP with the car.
There's no way to know until you try. Most of the time it's an hour or a day to be able to function. Being really good with it takes time.
Get a disel car. It's easier to drive manual in a diesel car. When you drive a manual that runs on gas tho, you will struggle and will have to relearn, but it won't be as hard.
I learned in about 15-20 minutes. It's really not rocket surgery. Granted I wasn't as smooth as I am now, but I could drive safely in traffic.
Lol wtf my boomer parents bought me a manual Saturn when I was 16 so I would know how to drive one, and I live in Florida of all places. Just watch YouTube there's no fricking reason to have to take lessons, only took me 3 days to learn.
Modern cars there isn't much advantage but if you drive old beaters manuals usually seem to hold up a while longer
Mentally prepare for the mistakes. You will frick up sometimes and the car will rev and throw you about. The people you are with will try to throw you off and make you want to get rid of it. It's ok, it's part of the process. Keep focus and practise.
You will understand why nobody you know likes it, but that will make it so much more satisfying when you get the hang of it.
the car isn't a piece of ownership to be flaunted and proudly displayed nowadays.
Just feels like the consensus in europe at least, is going towards being ashamed of owning one and as such, the less you interact with one and treat it more like nothing else but a vehicle from point a to point b, the better.
This is really obvious with the intense disdain the proletariat have for manuals, it requires slightly more thinking in general than just putting an auto into D and holding the gas pedal all the way to work. As we all know, thinking is bad and the more you let machines and the elite do it for you, the better.
Manuals suck in stop and go traffic, do you live in a congested area? I could see their argument then. Once you get out onto the roads though they are infinitely more fun
>Manuals suck in stop and go traffic
this is a meme if you have an organic clutch
>pay for some driving lessons
>to be able to press and release a clutch
