This winter i’ll be driving my ‘98 camry a half mile to work everyday. Temps will get to -20 degrees fahrenheit. How fricked will my car be?

just walk for 5 minutes or ride a bike for 1 minute and 30 seconds
-20 turns everything into a chore, specially with how needing to layer up restricts free movement.
Also lol welcome to being sick all the time.
>block heater
is good advice for any temp consistently below ~15F
>change oil very often
Not necessary.
>in that half mile as 50
lmfao
While it's true that the first mile causes as much wear as the next five,
All you need is block heater like anon said, or just let the lil fricker warm for at least 3 minutes.
And if you're really scared about the oil, look up Pfarm's oil reviews, not for any scientific purpose, but just to see how below-freezing 5- and 10- w grades function at those temps.
It's really not a serious killer, a block heater solves all of those problems, and letting the car idle for 3-5 solves most of it.
Facts not fiction people. We have big frickoff smaet parts in our brain. Facts not fears.
>-20 turns everything into a chore, specially with how needing to layer up restricts free movement.
>Also lol welcome to being sick all the time.
lmao what? I wear shorts and hoodie year round in temps lower than that and only get sick every couple years. Most cold countries are much healthier than most hot countries.
Champ if someone is talking about a half mile they aren't talking about celsius. -20C would be -4f, which for the human body (or a bloodoil machine) is a different world
>i wear a hoody and shorts all year in temps lower than that
Walking around like that in -20 is the furthest thing from comfort or tolerability, gtfo you mind parasite.
I knew you were using F... -20f is still not cold and is actually comfy as long as the humidity and wind are low. -40f is still comfy in shorts and a hoodie once you train your body to handle it. I used to work outside most of the day in that shit.
that is still celsius you moron. Where did you blow in from, stupid town?
Average leaf poster be like:
All those temps are lower than -20f you stupid frick. No wonder you people can't find your own country on a map lol. If you're too dumb to use simple math at least use fricking google lol.
>lower than -20f
didn't ask, L + ratio. You have it set to km/h moron, so you're using celsius not fahrenheit. Go be stupid somewhere else.
You know you can convert temperature units right?
>L + ratio
Ah that explains a lot.
>train your body to handle it
k
>imagine believing that shit and not being in control of your body
sounds fake, publicity, etc.
If adaptation were so simple Eskimos wouldn't wear thick hide suits in layers.
Frostbite is a contact/exposed area problem, which is why the nose and fingertips are the most often afflicted.
Wearing shorts doesn't stop your calves from getting it.
Now I gotta run lit. right now the coyotes that have been getting closer to town every year just killed a neighbors dog. Rifle
Eskimos don't dress that warm. The average homosexual going to the grocery store in 10f temps is dressed warmer. They also used to eat a frickload of fat and meat which kept them warm.
>Wearing shorts doesn't stop your calves from getting it.
My legs have never been frost bit and I've spent hours in -40 and lower temps. I've only got it on my ears.
>My legs have never been frost bit and I've spent hours in -40 and lower temps. I've only got it on my ears.
Quite a story. Hope that unit is Kelvin.
>If adaptation were so simple Eskimos wouldn't wear thick hide suits in layers.
Indigenous people wouldn't train their bodies to do that because it uses an insane amount of calories. Much more efficient to insulate yourself than put your metabolism into overdrive all the time
Maybe if you're fricking naked, sure.
the pair of you are both wronr about temperature/clothing. no one is wearing fricking shorts in -20 (f or C), and if they are, they're expending an obscene amount of energy keeping themselves warm, and yet are still moronic to risk frostbite. the only person "restricted" by layers doesn't know how to fit clothing properly and thinks their down parka is supposed to be fitted over a tshirt. -20f is perfectly bearable if you're dressed correctly and are moving somewhat consistently. the only annoyance would be shuffling through several feet of snow the whole way, which is more tiresome than impossible
t. lives somewhere that's regularly -30c and had lots of wind
Do yourself a favor and get a block heater. Will save your engine from accelerated wear, you’ll have heat in the car sooner and be easier on your starter/battery. If you can’t do that, maybe once you’re off work go for a longer drive to get everything up to operating temp.
>Do yourself a favor and get a block heater.
I went to Alaska a couple weeks ago for work and so many vehicles had block heaters it was crazy. I'm used to only seeing that on diesel trucks. Not having one in negative 20 degree weather is moronic.
Pretty much every vehicle in Canada comes with a block heater. Remote start is popular too.
I got to experience my 7.3 not wanting start when I was up in Wyoming. It was 0 or just below, it might have started if I cranked longer but I could hear the batteries getting weak. Plugged it in for a couple of hours and it spun right over. I totally get block heaters for all vehicles in those temps
That thing has to take forever to warm up. My 5.9 takes a fricking year at 40 degrees.
coolant temp isn't the same as what's going on in your crankcase and galleys, but ye a big fat iron block motor needs some coaxing. Our company mech reminds people every year to let the telehandlers idle for 5 minutes when it gets below 50 and 5-10min when it's in the low 40s high 30s.
>coolant temp isn't the same as what's going on in your crankcase and galleys
If I went by that I'd never go anywhere in the winter. I put an oil pressure gauge in mine since dodge uses a dummy switch.
Oh yeah it takes a while to get up to temp even in the 40s like you mentioned. It does have the exhaust back pressure valve on the hot side of the turbo to help the engine warm up quicker but it’s more of a pain in the ass because it chokes the engine basically. It closes up at idle and under part throttle restricting the exhaust if the oil/coolant is under a certain temp, truck feels line a dog when it’s closed.
maybe a battery warmer as well ?
damn thats old
Change your oil very often despite using the best synthetic and a nice extended life filter, clean oil is best oil, and it's cheaper than a motor.
reduce oil weight to a 0w30 or 0w20
viscosity becomes your enemy at these low ambient temperatures and if you're not even reaching operating temperature then you should run even lower viscosity.
block heaters are bae and they even make magnetic ones that go onto your oil pan instead of the typical casting plug style that could be expensive to install, there are also really dumb ones that you can splice into your lower rad hose, but they seem they would be inefficient at warming the engine?
store it indoors or cover it if you can, ice is a bastard
that said its a fricking half mile. you're going to be sitting in your car waiting for it to defrost longer than youll be walking.
OK BOOMER
Frick off with the "change oil every 3 seconds" meme. I've never changed an oil sooner than the recommended interval and have never had a major mechanical failure of an engine or transmission ever. In fact, the only failures I've ever had effectively amount to damaged wiring. Everything else has been normal wear parts like brake pads, tires, etc.
Call me a boomer as well because the saying is quite true; oil is cheap, engines are not. If you’re going to be working your engine hard or doing short trips like op mentioned, it’s cheap insurance to change the oil sooner. To each their own really, but it’s usually recommended by manufacturers to change your oil sooner if you’re in extreme conditions or work your vehicle hard
>oil change on 7.3 is $150 in oil now thanks to bidenflation
>3 oil changes a year will put you at $4500 over 10 years in just engine oil alone
I could pick up 3 junkyard engines for that price.
How does $150 a gallon sound for you?
>drive chud pickup with 15 quart oil capacity
>be upset that it's fricking expensive
Truckolds, everyone.
It will wear approximately the same amount in that half mile as it would if you were driving 50 miles. Longer drives also have a cold start period so it's not like the short distance is hurting it. Make sure you use a thin enough oil.
The only difference is that vehicle usage is normally tracked by miles, and you're going through many more cold starts per mile. Maybe shorten the life expectancy as measured in miles, but not as measured in number of days.
Also, shouldn't a Camry that old be pretty much considered disposable by now? Use it as long as you can but don't fret over "abuse" as long as it gets the job done.
>shouldn't a Camry that old be pretty much considered disposable by now?
In the coming democrat-approved economy, not even used toilet paper should be considered disposable.
>implying elephant marxists dont love it too.
back to where you came from election tourist.
>YES master Biden PLEASE keep cutting energy production and sending trillions of my tax dollars to the most corrupt country in the world! Please let me suffer for Ukraine to kill the ultimate enemy putler!!!
>implying any republican would not do the same
moron.
/misc/ plz leave
Taking a break from /k/ and /misc/ posting I take it?
notice how you didn't dispute anything he said, only whined about it
the u.s. are sending money to the u.s.?
big if true
gonna need monthly oil changes and weekly italian tune ups if you drive it like that
>half mile drives
do you have feet?
You will own nothing and you WILL be happy or else, fascist! You WILL go nowhere but work and you WILL love it!
that's not what I said
I am a shitbox collector. It's just that torturing cars with ultra short drives is pure evil
>I love cars!
>Don't drive your car, that's evil!
it's not even about israelitery. even a 90s camry engine won't last long with such short, repeated trips where the oil doesn't have time to warm up to operating temps and get rid of water in it.
>the slave class should go nowhere but work, glory to communism!
>summer's a great time to have ice cream
>wow you must obviously like global warming then
i drive every day for at least one hour
dumbass
Have you considered just taking a fricking drive once every week or two?
Dumbass
So you’re saying I could do the short trips everyday as long as I drive it up to freeway speeds for a while like once or twice a week?
im not sure what effect water in the oil would have when the car is off, an italian tune up may prolong the engine's life.
an engine that sees daily use for longer than 15-30 mins would still last longer than one that does repeated short trips + italian tune up.
still better than nothing but short trips though
You are a dumb Black person.
>sheeeit i aint finna be caught pulling up witout my whip
>wanting to use your car to avoid extreme cold is Black person behavior, goy, you don't want to be a Black person, do you??? Suffer for communism!
do communists ever think about making their possessions last, or passing them on to their offspring?
>wanting to use your possessions to avoid unnecessary suffering is communism! Walk everywhere, goy! Go nowhere but work!
the car won't even get to warm up in half a mile you fricking moronic tourist
homie It’s gonna be cold as shit
walk fast
buy a real coat
wear a had
what kind of fricking american are you, 6 year old me walked 4 km to school everyday and it regularly got below -15°C in Winter.
Your car isn't gonna be much warmer if you're only driving for 5 minutes
you fricking pathetic fricktard man youre a real piece of shit man, yourea a real fricking wimpy pussy ass b***h. honestly go frick yourself. youre a real fricking butthole for making this thread buddy. you cant walk 800 meters? thats legit like a 10 minute walk. FRICK you man
Americans are lazy as frick.
Wear a coat then Black person. Some exercise will do you good and warm you up.
my third post in this thread, I can't stress this enough how moronic it is to drive half a mile. the time it takes to start the car and scrape the ice off would be longer than just walking the distance
Honestly it feels good to jog in extreme cold. Just make sure to wear wool boxers so your dick doesnt freeze off, and you will get to work quickly and just use the car for weekends or something
I had this lard ass, fetal alcohol syndrome coworker. Her husband's dad had a profitable business, so they had family money to burn.
Her Russian gopnik husband bought her another "newer" used diesel 5 series BMW to replace the previous one she completely destroyed with short 2 minute trips thousands of times per year. Instead of walking 500m to work, she would drive her morbidly obese moron ass to work and back every day no matter if it's +30°C or -30°C.
They sold off the previous completely ruined 5 series diesel as "low mileage" to some sucker.
Short trips will kill the engine, so at least change the engine oil and filter every year to extend its miserable life.
cars need yearly oil changes if you drive them normally, eg reach 100 degree celsius oil temperature most of the time you drive it
there's gonna be so much condensation build up it's gonna need monthly oil changes
>monthly oil changes
my dad never changes engine oil becuase it's synthetic and topping off engine oil when it's burnt off is like changing it anyways
he is so smart
Explain how driving for 2 minutes hurts the car more than driving for 20 minutes. The first 2 minutes of the 20 minute drive are the same as if that was the entire distance.
Oil is designed to retain moisture with the condensation inside the engine.
As the engine warms up, the moisture is burned away in the hot oil.
If your engine never gets up to temp, the moisture keeps building up. Then you get into internal corrosion issues and increased bearing wear.
How much moisture do you think is in the air when it's that cold out?
holy christ what a moron. do you know how much water vapor is produced by an ice?
if your engine somehow survives the winter, please post the rust holes in every part of your entire exhaust system in the spring
Combustion produces water vapor whether it's hot or cold. You're making a big deal out of nothing
Yes which is exactly the point I'm making. Engines take longer to warm up in the winter, meaning that water will never be expunged and will collect in the oil, crankcase, and exhaust system and basically destroy the entire thing.
>How much moisture do you think is in the air
Combustion produces CO2 and H2O.
People on /o can’t be expected to know these things
It’s normal to just blurt out moronic opinions here
Engine never gets up to temp, moisture builds up in the oil, oil degrades and stops lubricating properly, everything that spins begins to wear prematurely. Cold starts at super low temps are murder on engines. That’s even before captain kangaroo here decides to immediately throw it in drive and get up to highway speed for half a mile before shutting it down.
>driving half a mile
do burgers really?
half a mile
>do burgers really?
Frick you, I've been forced to do the bullshit "walkable city" shit in the winter, it sucks. Let's see how much you enjoy walking on iced-over sidewalks and getting splashed with filthy slush by passing cars as you walk in the freezing dark while grocery bags cut into your hands.
So, yeah, I will drive my car a half a mile.
God fricking damn communists truly deserve to live in the "paradise" they dream up.
Stop being fat
if you haven't lived in america you'd know that there are hardly any walkable places outside of major cities. roads aren't friendly to pedestrian traffic
Presumably if OP lives half a mile from his work, he lives in a city.
>Grocery bags cut into hand
Fake post. Burgers only carry those brown paper bags that require two hands to carry like in the movies.
How stupid must one be to think that not using your car for every single trip mean you can't own one. Yes this is clearly communism
>putting on a coat and taking a 10 minute walk is "suffering"
t. never had to go anywhere in excessive negative temperatures
I’ve spent all day snowboarding in -30s (with wind chills in the -40s). You’re just a pussy.
>half mile
>800 meters
>car board
>no, driving car bad walk you dumb chud!
>>>/n/
>half mile.
Theres no good reasons to drive car that short distance, only total idiots avoid walking like plague. You must walk occasionally every week to prevent prematurely destroying your own body condition and making yourself physically weaker than average 70 year old guy before you reach 40+ year old age. I would understand driving if walking everyday takes more time than 17 minutes.
Lose weight
>drive half a mile
Lmao the memes about Americans are all true, aren't they?
its over
good battery and tires and you will have no problems. don't listen to all the israelites who say you need to buy a block heater. every time you start a car you create thousands of miniature explosions that heat the engine/car
>driving half a mile to work
holy shit how fat are you
>he is so fat that walking half a mile is an arduous task
Why drive? Walk instead.
why cant OP just walk and why is he trying to make this a political thing
>800 steps
>drive
just walk, enjoy the fresh winter air as an extra
Then why did you make the thread? You're leasing a 98 camry?
If I lived in the salt belt I'd have a leased AWD winter beater
Holy shit imagine coping this hard over renting your car.
Bet you rent your house too like a cuck
>Leasechad here, this is literally not my problem
>blows engine while under lease
>is now literally your problem
>I-I-I'm not owned. Y-Y-You're owned!
I broke my ankle while logging a decade ago and temperatures under 40 cause crippling pain. You're frick shitting I'm gonna get my ass into my car and drive it 3 minutes down the road if it's cold out.
I have never seen a single adverse effect from this in my 90s dodge. No compression loss, no noise, oil tests came back healthy.
This thread is just a few morons that read something on the internet and are trying to sound smart.
Unless your car is garaged you will spend more time clearing the ice of than it would have taken to just walk there.
Also
>taking the car to commute half a mile
do mutts really??
Yes.
I am in no way interested in navigating 7 foot tall snow banks through traffic while freezing my ass off just to satisfy some moronic homosexual telling me I'm not allowed to use my car.
>mom!!!!! come pick me up from work mom its too cold my fingies hurt!!!! 🙁
I use my property how I want, deal with it you moronic homosexual.
>my property
You don't own property
>city kid thinking that everyone is like her
I have acres, I have 5 vehicles, I have 14 pieces of heavy earth-moving equipment, and I use that equipment in my excavating business. What do you have? Some game consoles and a bus pass?
>has what I assume amounts to a metric tonne of heavy equipment
>even claims to use it
>too much of a b***h to walk a half mile in the cold
x
I have no reason to waste my time walking when I have several faster forms of transportation to choose from. I use my shit how I want, not how you want me to use it, homosexual. Sorry you're too poor to maintain your rusted out camry.
>muh i do what i want
okay, but you're still a b***h homie that's afraid of subzero temps
>rusted out camry
wait do you think i'm op? are you a pussy and also moronic?
>you don't want to walk that means you're afraid of cold!
Meanwhile I operate an open cab bulldozer in 60 below with wind, but okay. I'm still gonna drive my cars no matter how you try to demonize me, israelitehomosexual.
>often -60 where I live
sure comrade, whatever you say
I'm not part of your lefty homosexual club, don't use your lingo when addressing me.
Your mom used her lingo on my wiener last night, if you can catch my drift?
>everything is /misc/
lmao I was just suggesting you had to be a ruskie if you make your living digging around in -60 weather, which I still think you're larping about
>You literally can't have a self-maintained equipment fleet and be out of shape
>you can't be fat if you fix things
I see you have no idea how much work it is to maintain most heavy machinery, while working with that machinery and hand tools in a land excavation business.
I bet you can't even lift the jackhammer I have.
>I am le strong man
>you cannot understand how manly I am
says the b***h that still won't post body, fleet, a thermometer while "working" outside, or not be a b***h and walk in some snow
I am just a guy that moves dirt for people. I have no interest in appearing manly, I am not claiming to be a fitness god, and you're fantasizing about me being obese in another attempt to demonize me for the crime of using what I have.
I will continue using my property as I see fit. I hope you go to sleep furious that I will not listen to you, Rabbi.
>Le uber tough machismo machine man can't walk half a mile
Seriously, post your weight on the scale or shut up
The frick kind of moron are you that conflates not wanting to walk through snow drifts and plow piles with being incapable of walking? You literally can't have a self-maintained equipment fleet and be out of shape.
I don't, because my mom isn't a man.
>literally
Low IQ post.
Want to try again?
>using a word I don't understand makes you stupid!!!
Whatever you need to tell yourself to feel like a real man for not having a car you can drive at will. Imagine being this furious about other people not wanting to scale 12 foot mountains of snow in the winter, burning up a large portion of what little daylight there is during that time of year.
I'm just gonna drive, I hope this absolutely infuriates you. Now I'm gonna start doing it more in the warmer parts of the year as well because I know that you are ripping your hair out over someone using their own property how they like.
>Still no weight
Ok, you're obese. Got it.
sure. doesn't make you not a pussy or exempt from ridicule though
If it's only a half mile it really isn't worth it
The only way it won't be downright destructive to your engine is if you use a block heater and heat up the car prior to driving it and when you leave work you drive around for a bit longer before going home
Fricking walk.
Invest in some skis
>a half mile
Are you crippled? Walk boy damn, it's half a mile!
just wait till interest rates are 10% and your lease is due up, hope you like paying $400/mo for a base camry
>half mile to work everyday
homie just walk.
This thread is stupid and gay. Put on a big coat and walk. Your car will be fricking cold and uncomfortable and even heated seats won't be warm by the time you drive there.
>corpulent amerilards reminded that they could use a modicum of exercise
>
>MUH GOMMUNISM
>MUH israeliteS
>MUH NWO
i would kill for a half mile commute so i didnt have to drive
t. burger
this
frick the fascism of cars. i live in a small town and even here they are demolishing sidewalks and parks for more roads and parking lots it's literally impossible to walk down the block
I put a bed and stuff into a broken workvan. I just stay at work 4 days a week. No one even knows I stay in the old van. Its in the parking lot, so I don't even walk more than my rentie coworkers
>this is literally not my problem
Bro you're the one spending the most money to operate that piece of shit early on in it's life for however many miles your daddy the car company allotted you on their car, and there's nothing wrong with having nice new things, but quit acting like you're getting away with spending less.
A half mile? Walk you lazy piece of shit!
