Nah, in 70s a regular car like Dodge Dart would barely last 150k miles.
idiotic statistic. until the 2000's there was steep technological progress and people were rich enough to afford new and better cars. nowadays there's practically no reason to get a new car because they only got worse while the >15 year old cars work perfectly fine and wont die any time soon.
My 64 built Ford is still going strong. original bottom end, gearbox, diff, etc, etc.
People were wealthier back then and could afford to upgrade cars every time they got a promotion which was frequent.
my father bought a new car every two years when I was growing up. not becausethe old one had anything wrong with it, but just because that was the thing g you did if you had money.
He was a carpet layer and my mom stayed at home. Everyone is just more poor now.
It's a sad state of affairs. My dad was a union carpenter and my mom was an elementary school teacher. I think we were considered upper middle class in the 80's/early 90's
boomers and identityless posers compulsively trade in their cars every two or three years, do you think this is a recent phenomenon?
Vote with your wallet.
>you will own nothing and you WILL be happy
Eat the bugs bigot. Greta demands it.
>cars then
>the five digit odometer rolled over to zero, time to drive it to the junk yard before it kills me
>cars now
>regularly reach 250k miles with braindead maintenance unless the car is European
In the 1970s having cars made with galvanized metal was considered a feature, they literally warrantied the cars to "not rust through within the first 10,000 miles". For the love of god have some perspective.
ok but you could actually afford one while these days 60% of americans can't afford new car but have to buy used.
They are more expensive these days, yes. Would you rather pay cheap change for a shitbox? They still do it in the third world
I think the point is that it wasn’t necessarily the case that cars couldn’t make it to high mileage before, just people were wealthy enough that they didn’t need to keep driving a 5+ year old car.
The entire ethos of the 50’s and 60’s post war consumer culture was “keeping up with the Joneses”. You’d be judged by the neighbors for not having the latest consumer products whether it’s golf clubs, blenders, vacuum cleaners, or cars.
This was the space age, and things were improving rapidly. Your ‘53 Hoover vacuum would actually be twice as powerful and half the weight as the ‘51 model. The only industry that’s similar today is computers/cell phones. Everything else has been stagnant for 10 years at least. The only things they’ve managed to do in cars is put an iPad in the center console and a backup camera. Engines and Trannies have improved slightly on the emissions and fuel economy side at the cost of reliability.
Since the 80’s businesses have found it more profitable to make shit cheaper and shittier in China than to make better products to compete in the marketplace.
>Everything else has been stagnant for 10 years >at least.
Well, they have been squeezing more horsepower out of the same size or even smaller engines. And TVs are better than they were 10 years ago, so there's that. As for reliability, sure there's more things that can break, but I'll put even temperamental Euromobile against any car from the 1970s or 1980s, or even earlier (late 50s, early 60s cars often had Soviet-era build quality).
>Would you rather pay cheap change for a shitbox
yes.
>37 highway
Wtf they made cars like that back then?
low weight, high torque, no cats, eco tuned carb, long gearing and 55 speed limits are a hell of a drug. most cars being under 3000 lbs helps the most by far, see the literal 3/4 ton 80s civic whipping out 50 mpg without even trying
Damn 37 highway and 25 city. Pretty good
In the 60s/70s, cars were usually scrapped before 100k miles. What you’re seeing here is survivorship bias.
