Ive been looking for a fun to drive car under 35k. Didnt bother looking at anything European because ive always been told everything is expensive to maintain. Came across the B58 and it seems like a pretty reliable and fast engine. Is there anything else I should know? I know jackshit about BMW’s modeling system as well as Mercedes or Audi’s. Is the 340i xdrive the way to go?

get a stang GT
Don't do this. I fell for the mustang meme amd paid dearly. The coyotes are prone to ticking, rod bearing failure and cylinder wall scoring.
you gorilla moron. you baboon fricking moron.
brz/gr86 is the actual way to go
b58 is a good engine. toyota took it for the supra, and ppl have modded it to like 700hp before the driveline started giving up.
M240i/340i are great cars with a great engine.
Avoid xDrive unless you really need it.
Whats wrong with xdrive?
Weight and maintenance, nothing catastrophic.
What kind of maintenance?
VTG requires oil change like autotroony. Nothing catastrophic but expect npcs to neglect it like they neglect fluid changes in general and god forbid something goes sideways.
As I said, nothing catastrophic just be wary and you'll be fine. Personally I'd much rather go with a perfect maintenance record over muh auto/manual or xDrive/sDrive.
M.I.A.T.A.
do you want 4 or 2 doors is probably the most important question
used m2
Used M2 or M240. B58 is a monster of an engine. Xdrive isn't needed but its the best AWD system out there and makes the monster acceleration of the B58 moron proof.
DO NOT listen to jamal / Pablo telling you to get a stang GT
It doesnt seem like m240s go for less than 38k
You don't need xdrive, it cant be decoupled in previous gen 240/340i and you can't do skids properl Why buy a bmw that can't do donuts?
B58 is modern 2jz, laughably overbuilt, laughably undertuned from factory.
Many sure to get one with an lsd or make it your first mod.
How big is the difference between the m240i and the 340i?
It’s just heavier and less sporty with 4 doors. Recent model years have a weird grill with crosses / stars in it. Still puts the power down though
I'm not OP but my interest has been piqued by the 240 and 340. Are they reliable at all or are they prone to expensive parts breaking?
engine is the important bit which is rock solid unless you do moronic mods past 550 hp. Even then the worst that could happen is it consumes a lot of oil.
I've been out of warranty for over a year with lots of mileage running bootmod 3 to get me to about 410hp with no other mods. Haven't had expensive repairs
Just get an ND MIATA
>ive always been told everything is expensive to maintain
this is true. expect to pay 3-500% more when a part fails than you would for a comparable domestic part.
