I fell for the diesel meme and it fricking sucks. They act like these trucks are super reliable but at the end of the day it's still a 25 year old truck. and diesel is so complicated. There's so many extra parts. I'm definitely going back to gas soon. Who cares if they "only" last 200k miles. A full rebuild would still be cheaper than what it's cost me to get this diesel to 300

Pretty much this. Unless you're paying for a mint condition classic, its pretty much a crap shoot buying a 20 year old truck with 150k miles on it, Diesel or not

        Gas
        >lower fuel economy
        >lower tow capacity
        >cheaper maintenance
        >V8 noises
        >lower weight and softer suspension for smoother ride quality
        Diesel
        >expensive upkeep
        >much harsher ride
        >superior fuel economy but more expensive at the pump
        >significantly great tow/haul capability
        >turbo noises

Unless you're frequently pulling trailers over a certain size, there's not much reason to get the diesel. However, this is assuming you're looking at a 1500 gasser vs a 2500 turbodiesel. 2500 gassers are useless and drink fuel at a rate that makes them not worth buying, period.

This is gay speak for morons. 12 Valve Cummins and 7.3L Powerstrokes are piss easy to work on and refuse to die. My ancient 6BT is incredibly easy to do fricking anything on. One of the more simple vehicles I've worked on and it's reliable to a fault.

Awesome at drinking gas and being thermodynamically inefficient in comparison to a diesel. Gas engines are fricking moronic for HD trucks.

            [...]

Yes. If you aren't in constant need of heavy towing or hauling capability, don't fricking buy a diesel. The only other reason to do so is because you want to churn black smoke while going fast and you have a shitload of disposable income.

            >Awesome at drinking gas
Get's 90% of the MPG of a modern diesel, costs less per mile in fuel, way less in maintenance, and saves the cost of an entire engine replacement versus the cost of a diesel. Would be cooler in a half ton but most half tons come with onions turbo 4 and 6 cylinders now or stupid deactivation features. Big block pushrod V8 is based.

            Anonymous

What maintenance are you factoring in besides oil and filters? I don’t think the gasser is a whole lot cheaper when it comes to that, hell the powerstroke take 10w-30 now.

            Anonymous

No one cares about your comparisons to modern diesels. Delete any one of them and they almost double the 7.3's economy. My 32 year old 6BT gets 20mpg. Show me the cost of lifetime maintenance on a 7.3 in 30 years and we can compare it to the lifetime of my shitbox at 62. I guarantee mine will be significantly less and, to cap it off, my truck can pull more weight with less stress on the block.

The 7.3 Gasser is moronic and shit. You Fordhomosexuals can cope all you want, but your numbers are garbage and you'll keep embarassing yourselves defending the turd until empirical evidence finally proves you're gay morons who should die of AIDS.

Diesel is only a viable option if it is actively making you money. Otherwise, the higher cost of fuel, increased frequency of maintenance, and general increased cost as opposed to gas will put you upside down on the thing.
If you're using it to work, that's where the diesel shines. Everything can then be used as a write-off and the increased towing capacity and extra torque will be well worth it.

I remember doing tree work back in the late 90s and noticing that diesel was significantly cheaper than gas.
Then sometime in the mid-late 2000s it was suddenly significantly more expensive than gas(which also got expensive).
The diesel car fad here only just started when it was expensive.

Old diesels are old pieces of shit. New diesels are insanely badass and powerful but are expensive to own. New gas trucks shot all over old diesels for capability and are more reliable while being cheaper than old diesels to run.

Diesel is absolutely better than gas it just doesn't make sense to own. It's sort of how a GTR shits all over a Miata but at the end of the day one cost $200k and never sees the limit so most people rightly point out the Miata is the better choice.

Diesels make a shit ton of power (new ones) and can essentially pull anything you want including things youre not legally allowed to. It's just that they're much more expensive compared to a truck that'll do 95% of the same work and reliability for a third of the TCO. There's a reason diesel shops exist and gas truck shops don't.

    >12V
Old as frick and not safe to tow. 2nd gens are falling apart now and the first gen is a complete shitbox that literally (correct use) has a frame suspension setup from 1972. Not to mention regular cab or a regular cab + fake seats makes it impractical. It'll get out towed by a modern half ton and I say that as a longtime first Gen owner. It's a toy.

    >7.3L
LMAO at this piece of shit turd. 6.0L fricking mogs it despite what the internet tells you. Our fleet has run superduties all the way back to the old ass IDI trucks and I say from experience Ford was shit until the 6.0L. Ideally I'd try for an 08+.

You can't service half the electrical components on an OBS now outside the junkyard it's fricked. It's a turd like the 5.9L Cummins but dramatically less supported and much more complicated with it's half ass injection system.

Never fricked with GM shit tbh.

7.3 gas super duty or better yet, a $15k 6.2L from 11+ is what I'd buy if I needed a work truck.

    Frick a Diesel.

Forgot to mention the MPG meme which is complete bullshit. VE pumped 12V with a better geared NV4500 swap with pizza cutters doesn't pull what these clowns are claiming with trucks making double the power (and this fuel). LMAO it's like people claiming they've got a 10" wiener.

I 2nd a 6.2, its probably fords best drivetrain since efi, and i never hear anyone talk about it

6.0s are great in van and medium duty applications where IT STAYS STOCK and 90% of your jobs are hpo leaks and maintenance, but finding an unmolested truck is going to be like finding a barn find gt40

In fact, finding unmolested diesels is so hard dieselgays have 180'd their opinion on 6.5s and now those are getting bought up
