So I know that S197 Mustang seat rails have a tendency to rust because they don't have a protective coating but does this look rusted through or more like surface rust? Don't want the seat detaching if I crash yknow?

If you're going to buy it, make the guy let you check or walk

Do it covertly when you look in person lol
Just take your keys and give it a good scrape

I'll try to do that but I'm also getting the car checked by a mechanic before I settle on it so I'm gonna ask him about the (absolute) state of these rails

I'd run away, dude. The way those are rusted makes it seem like it was in a flood.

This, also it looks like the interior is a mess so the guy obviously didn't really care for the car.
Never buy a car with a messy interior, if they can't keep the place they sit in clean and well maintained, what makes you think they kept the rest of the car well maintained?

CHECKED. i'd want to at least pull the carpets below the seat and check pan condition. I'd bet it's 1/4 to the way the seat rails are at.

The former is feminine make-work with no tangible benefit, and the latter is actual maintenance? How do you figure they have anything in common?

            >make-work with no tangible benefit
            >rust so bad that it could possibly spread to the frame
Everyone I've met with a dirty interior were also 5k miles overdue for an oil change. A dirty interior usually indicates the person doesn't care about the car and literally only use it to get from point a to b, and only performs maintenance when something breaks.
There are exceptions of course, but its usually the easiest way to tell a car was not cared for.

Structural rust is not an element of a "messy interior."

Are you accounting for the difference between a Canadian and American dollar? You can get a V8 S197 for under 13k maple crusted beaver pelts.

Seat will not hold you in place anyway, that would be the seat belt.

Also, if you crash wth this you are dead anyway
