Most merge lanes and on-ramps are slightly downhill so you have a better chance of matching the speed of the traffic you're merging into. Idling down them then flooring it to match the speed of the traffic you're merging into is beyond fricking moronic. This is why you got people up your ass.
That's more of a driver issue. Most modern SUV's and trucks handle really well and can take turns pretty hard safely. I see way more homosexuals in sports cars and supercars with 3xx width rear tires taking turns at 5mph.

I tend to tailgate before passing because the person ahead of me is going slightly faster than the person in the lane next to me. I get real close and signal so when I have a big enough gap I get let through. Countless times I have just cruised and got stuck behind slow people because the next lane driver can't maintain speed and prevents my pass.
