Looks like the LA area to me. There are some stations scattered around that scalp the frick out of gas because they're the only station for miles on some major commuting route, and charge like $2 more than the regional average. It could also be SF like

That's what a pricing cartel does to you. Powerplants are disincentivized to produce power because it makes it cheaper. Having 'breakdowns' at just the right ratio to maximize profits is their tactic

Market-price electricity is almost free at times because of all the wind power they've been building. But you might have to pay 3 € / kWh on some really cold windless winter day if you accept a contract like that.
Suppose that might still save money on average if you can charge something when power is cheap, and the house is insulated well enough to not need constant heating.

At times it's not used. Storing energy is super expensive if you're not built for it from the outset. Electricity is a basic need in modern society, consumers aren't equipped to deal with pricefixing nor can their finances usually carry a random grand in extra fees. Longterm contracts jumped up to 0,4€/kWh, making them extemely disadvantageous too.

Most electricity consumers kind of expect the supply to be constantly available, so if that constant supply is in any danger, any supplier with capacity to spare can name the price.
And if that one supplier is asking for 2.5 € / kWh to save the grid during that one night, why would anyone else accept any less?
Were there any competition literally anyone would jump at the opportunity of getting 2,4€/kWh by running a really costly array of diesel gensets. But that's not how the electricity 'market' works. A couple companies control entire supply with no limits, they'll just tank production until it costs 100% of your income.

California gas taxes are only like 50 cents more than in Midwestern or Southern states. The other $2+ of the price difference is just pure profiteering, and you see it through the massive variation between stations only a few miles from one another, or how quickly station owners are willing to change their prices when there's competition, my local supermarket recently opened a gas station that was $1 cheaper than the local average and within a week the Shell across the street had lowered their prices to match.
I do think California needs to get rid of their ridiculous non-standard gas blends though, they may have made sense in the days when most cars were carbureted but any modern car with other states' gas puts out 1/10th the emissions of an old car on the California blend so it's totally pointless and just a needless burden on those of us forced to live in this hellhole.

Gas prices vary pretty wildly in Cali. last time I went there, i paid under $4 for premium in a couple of cases, and nearly $7 at another station
i last filled up my honda 4 months ago; i use fuel stabilizer so it's still good. I dont drive much. If I had and EV my battery would be dead after 3 weeks.
Flexfuel vehicle, E85 fuel or diy ethanol fuel are the solution before US gets better president someday. Biden's policies are the cause of expensive fuels.

Corn farming is heavily subsidized by taxpayer money and ethanol fuel would not be economically viable otherwise. Corn monoculture farming is also extremely land/water inefficient and is destroying the country’s topsoil, we’re headed for another dustbowl within a few decades thanks to that.

Thats good long as petroleum fuels are also subsidized, If I remember correctly even EVs are subsidized in some areas.
My point was more that there’s no good reason to subsidize corn farming for ethanol production because of how harmful and inefficient it is. It would be much better to just use EVs. This is not an inherent problem with ethanol, though, algae farming for biofuel production would be much better if we could figure it out.
Corn ethanol monoculture wouldn't be a good thing, but if a nitrogen fixing high-density fuel crop could be developed as part of a crop rotation to provide fuel for agriculture that wouldn't be a bad thing.
Ideally the requirement that all new vehicles sold after 2035 should have 80% of their use be all-electric would reduce need for fuel dramatically. Possibly enough to make ethanol or other bio-fuels more viable at northern latitudes.
I disagree with you. Theres nothing you can do to make me accept EVs or plug in hybrids. I support internal combustion engines running on corn ethanol fuel over any EVs, full hybrids. Most of water comes from ground, heaven and water from this planet is never ending so its not an issue at all until the whole planet blows up for some reason. Instead of complaining how much water corn ethanol production consumes, maybe you should complain more about those 10000-800000+ amounts of homes with piped water-radiator heating systems that are closed systems where the water is never released back into nature before the heating systems are replaced with some alternative system or the whole houses demolished to the ground.

Removing all the subsidies would be sensible, but as long as one side only dishonestly argues against subsidies for everything other than fossil fuels it is a non-starter. The whole point of subsidies for options other than fossil fuels is so that they can get going to provide actual competition from being dependent on a fuel whose price is controlled in part by hostile foreign nations. There is no true free market for energy as long as countries can dump their supply at a temporary loss to create permanent dependence.
That's the hard lesson Europe forgot when they started shutting down clean nuclear energy and made themselves vulnerable to Russia.
